But is it scanning with the Avira cloud engine? I actually prefer a local based signature scanner, perhaps Wise Anti Malware is better. Did you recently check it out?

I just tested it and it is using it's own cloud scan engine, not Avira's.

What a bummer, perhaps I should give Wise a try because they are still using the local Avira engine according to mekelek. BTW, I'm not testing for myself but for friends who are fed up with bloated AV's and don't care about privacy risks. I sometimes give them advice.

While you're at it, why not give Webroot a try, huh? It's lighter than a barrel of helium on my laptop.

Are sigs the key factor in security issues nowadays? Really?

well other than the top players every other AV relies 99% on the signatures.

It's cloud based that's why it's probably so light. But the reason why I became interested in Wise and Malware Hunter is purely because of the Avira engine.

If you are interested in Avira engine, then perhaps you can take a look at Heimdal or Thor (as it will apparently be called).

Without Avira, it is probably just as bad as the free version of IObit Malware Fighter.

Yes I saw it, but I'm afraid these Heimdal products are a bit too invasive for me, I don't need no network traffic scanning.

Yes exactly, Avira and the fact that they seem to be pretty lightweight are the only thing that made them interesting.

I have heard that Avira Free AV, oddly enough, actually uses the Avira engine. Why not try THAT?

General consensus is that Avira Free AV is bloated.

After detecting threats, Avira seems to often run multiple scans at once, which causes slowdowns. I'm not sure how it fares on clean computers, where nothing will get detected, as the last two times I tried it, there were various PUPs on the computers that were detected and this lead to the multiple scans.

This behaviour has only been happening for a few years.

Slowdown isn't bloat, but still is NOT good. This is the first I have heard of this particular issue. Several of my friends & family use Avira Free so I ask 3 questions:
    • I wonder if this behavior is unique to the free version only, do you know?
    • Other than the slowdown, what are the symptoms that multiple scans are under way?
    • What is the duration of the slowdown?

    1. I'm sure that the paid version would have the same issue.
    2. If you open Task Manager, you will see two scan processes running and both using CPU time. I can't recall if there was ever a third scan process launched, or if it was limited to two.
    3. That depends on how long it is until one of the scans completes, which will vary.

I just installed the free version of Avira on my test computer. To call it bloated, is a huge understatement. It installed seven programs on my system. Alongside Avira's launcher and Avira Antivirus, there is also Phantom VPN, Privacy Pal, Safe Shopping, Software Updater and System Speedup. I don't have a use for any of them, but they can be individually uninstalled. Soon after installation completed, it found and quarantined a PUP. For a few minutes, there were two avscan.exe processes running, using about 25% CPU time each. I'm sure that it nothing had been detected, there would have only been a single scan process.

Perhaps not -- IF the scan involves any recourse whatsoever to the cloud for analysis -- the free version would likely be repeatedly placed at the rear of any queue, behind enterprise users & paid home users.

All of these "extras" can be valuable security/utility apps for some users. What Avira is failing to do is to make these extras "opt-in" during installation, rather than automatically installing them.

Seriously, however, I am having difficulty figuring out WHY Avira would give away potentially useful apps. In any event, I doubt if they do it simply to add "bloat."

Can you think of a possibly valid reason why Avira would trigger such intensive scans because of an already-quarantined PUP? I wonder --- is Avira manifesting extra caution (good!) or poor programming (bad!)?

It's to make money, as you can upgrade them paid Pro version. An an example here is the product page for Phantom VPN Pro. https://www.avira.com/en/avira-phantom-vpn-pro
You are right, some of the extras could be useful for some people, but it would be good to be able to opt out of installing them.
I have no idea of the reasoning behind it and I believe this behaviour has only started in the last few years. I haven't witnessed this behaviour with other products. If WSA finds infections, it will trigger another scan being run. But, not until the current scan has finished.

I just found this post I made two years ago.
Apparently it is not normal behaviour, but it happened.
