I want to purchase a new pc: actually I use Seven and I'm happy and I don't want 10, for many, deducible reasons. My question is: the last version of 8, 8.1, works fine and without problems ? The restore of Menu Start works fine ?

Although I prefer Windows 10, Windows 8.1 works very well. I've got some older laptops that I run Windows 8.1 as Windows 10 runs slowly on them. There are a number of programs which will bring back the Windows 7 style Start Menu and they work very well, so the lack of a native Start Menu, is not an issue.

Don't you find intrusive and boring the obligatory updates ?

I don't, because on previous versions of Windows, I install all updates anyway. It has been my experience over many years, that it is extremely rare for updates to cause problems. As a result, I don't feel the need to decide which updates I want to install.

Of course, this is not the case for everyone. I have had issues on my main computer running Windows 10, where some updates fail to install. This is certainly annoying, but does not cause any issues. On my other Windows 10 computers, where I have far less software installed, updates always complete installing.

W10 is like the worst windows version in ALL aspects combined compared 7 or 8.1.
8.1 is very good and I'm a hardcore fan of W7, it's like the perfect balance between 7 and 10.
I use Classic Start Menu to replace the Metro Start menu.

No it's not. That is just your own personal opinion.

You can stay with Windows 8 if you want. But eventually people that use Windows will have to use Windows 10. Might as well get accustomed to it now.

Personally, having used both I will pick Windows 10. Also considering how unpopular Windows 8 was received it is unlikely Microsoft will extend support for it like they did with Windows XP.

I had 7 Pro on this laptop, with a separate restore to factory partition. It also came with a disk to upgrade to 8.1. When 10 came along, I got it and tried to like it but I had several pieces of software it would not run. Unfortunately I waited too long to go back. So, I figured I would just restore the laptop to 7 Pro, Well, Win 10 had removed it. After a few minutes of foul language, I remembered the disk. I used the 8.1 Pro disk and installed Win 8.1, and I love it. It's faster than 10, reliable, and all my software works.

If you don't like the tile desktop (I hated it), go into Task Manager, Properties, then click on the Navigation button. Halfway down is Start Screen. Check the top two boxes in Start Screen, then hit the Apply button, and it starts with the familiar desktop. I don't care that MS is stopping support. I'm sticking with 8.1 as long as this machine is running. If it dies before I do and, if I still know who and where I am, I'll be looking at another HP and hope the 8.1 OEM disc works on it.

But, this is only for the Windows Store app, not the desktop app. I had no idea Dropbox was available in the Windows Store. I've been using Windows 8 and 10 since the beta versions were released, but have spent no more than a few minutes using the Windows Store.

It wont work, as it requires that the computer has SLIC 3.0 information in the BIOS, which indicates that the system is licensed for Windows 8. Without that information, Windows should install, but won't be activated.

Opinions? Let's look at facts in terms of numbers: As of June of this year Win 10 had 35.7% of the user share of all personal computers whereas Win 8.1 is less than 5%... Windows 10 is the best OS ever, and despite the ongoing vituperation of mandatory updates, most users (we are talking of millions) have had no problems including me on two fast machines. Win 8.1 is good (I have used it) but Win 10 is the current state of the art, period.

Yes, but as I stated, there are a lot of other companies that are dropping support for it as well, at least officially. This was just one example. Folks can run Windows 8 if they want but it will be the same situation as Vista getting dropped before XP. Companies are dropping support for 8 before 7, just for lack of popularity. I can't remember the last time I saw a customer running Windows 8. Probably over a year ago. It's no big deal to me, but I can't in good conscience recommend it.

But anything that runs on both Windows 7 and 10, will also run on Windows 8. There are no specific Windows 8 versions of software.

If you can still get Win 8 then go for it, it isn't filled with that unstoppable M$ spyware. You can use Classic Start to get the start menu back, and disable Windows Update. You can also use Spybot Anti-Beacon to block Win 8 from almost completely communicating with M$.

Large number of users doesn't mean they haven't any Windows 10 problems.

the major problem of brand new hardware is that those current chipsets are only supported from windows 10, windows 8 need additional chipset support from mainboard vendor - in some cases not present or not possible. windows 7 is complete out of choice nowerdays and drivers are luck.
next issue would be build 1803 which has currently issues beside new features.

Very strange comment, if MS has 600 million users with Win 10, it means that the number of people having problems will be higher than any another group, for example Win 8 which has perhaps 50 million users. One can choose any OS by MS, and be happy with it, who gives a hoot really, but the latest in this kind of business is easily the state of the art and the best. Linux is the living evidence that free does not work with large numbers of people and even Mac OS aren't faring any better...

Windows 10 is much better than the strange vision/concept that Microsoft had for Windows 8; Win 10 like @Osaban said, is the current state of the art.

In every metric Windows 10 is superior to version 8, privacy too, so why use a inferior OS?

If one is really concerned about privacy and dont trust Microsoft, there is always a Linux distro out here ...

    Just to specify: it's not a thread 8 VS 10, I don't want 10, I only asked some information about 8. ;)
