I would install MBAM again to see if a Threat Scan comes back clean. I would also get a second opinion from something like HitmanPro.

Almost all 2nd opinion scanners have an issue with malware that utilize more complex persistence mechanisms. I know this is uncomfortable to think about, but that does not make it any way less true.

Please read again guest's post above. It is the Path to True Wisdom.

Would you put EAM, particularly the behaviour blocker, in this category?

My last video concerned EAM. I'll let you decide.

@bellgamin Same advice as @guest only using WD, but with added protection from SRP and sandboxing took a bit of a learning curve in exchange for 5yrs infection free PC.

I decided foolishly to give the 390 Component Package a try. After installing it, I could NOT open any web browser using W10 64bit.

AVs are for beginners, because they don't know/need/want more; people who are security forums regulars shouldn't rely on AVs anymore; or at least not as main protection.

Bit of a sweeping statement that guest.

I don't see anything wrong with someone using an av on a machine along with anything else they choose to run.
In my book it doesn't imply that they are lower down the security intelligence scale than anyone else.

Nothing wrong too, i just say experienced users have better solutions as main protection.
The signature model is obsolete, most AVs real protection is their pro-active mechanisms (BB, HIPS, sandbox or whatever), the AV engine is now more a comfort feature.

And need deep pockets (AppGuard, ReHIPS) ;). Though NVT has great free products :thumb:.

    Enough OT :isay:.

Yeah, but you pay one way or another. Getting machines cleaned off isn't cheap either

The question is that those experienced users dont need those "better solutions" at all, they arent going to run "free videos.exe" or "email attachment.js" and sometimes the comfort that a AV engine offers when it determinates that a file is clean or when the "experienced user" does a judgment mistake is exactly what is needed in a domestic environment.

Your setup for example is very enterprise minded, it is for a environment where the user should run just a very limited number of programs and that doesnt cut at all for gamers and average users that just simple want to use their machines.

Pure signatures antivirus are dead, but modern antivirus is the optimal solution for most users needs.

You have summed it up nicely. I stepped way back in my configuration big time.

Currently waiting to check out the new AppGuard when it gets released.

    Sorry for the OT.

Indeed, i decided to go this way long time ago because it gave me security and stability; i now barely encounter any issues with my OS, unlike many classic users.
i have few installed apps (mostly security apps and production software like MS Office, Slack, etc...), the rest (those i consider "entertainment" like media players, etc...) are all portable located on a separate partition. I don't play games anymore (in my previous hardcore gamer life, i dual-booted an OS just for playing games).

i still believe that experienced users may just need a simple AV (if they can't live without one) but should rely more on system-locking software (SRP, anti-exe, etc...)

After updating to the 390 component package I had problems reaching numerous websites. It took a while to figure out that it was being caused by MalwareBytes Web Protection. Turning Web Protection off fixed the problem.

The other day on XP I decided to see if MBAM would update. It did, which surprised me. I haven't installed MBAM on my Surface Book, even though I have a lifetime license. I just run the MBAE standalone version, instead.
