No more individual patches for Windows 7 and 8

I have experienced that too on a W7 system that has never had a rollup installed - it gets security-only updates. It happened a few months back so I hid the RU (it was the Nov 2017 RU) and then another one popped up when I checked for updates, so I ran disk cleanup and that RU disappeared. I did not receive anymore after that. I'm not sure if it's disappearance is related to that activity, but there was a couple of hundred MBs in WU cleanup performed.

In a post on another forum I read that other people have experienced it too. The MVP stated that the MS catalog is for sysadmins, not consumers with attitude. He went on to say that they use a service that has a file management system that prevents this from happening. I have no way of knowing if he is correct.

I was not aware that PIII systems were supported on W7. I have a PIII-M laptop (ThinkPad T23) and there is no way it even meets Vista's minimum requirements, much less W7 requirements. No hardware upgrade path either. This is a really odd article.

 

Tnx VR. I looked at those links but those installs are mostly anomalies. You know there is a guy who successfully installed W10 on a P2 - the graphics card was in internal hemorrhage.

Intel PCs prior to 2001 do not have SSE2. There is no mention of AMD in the article, but they introduced SSE2 in 2003. The thing is, P3s were around prior to XP. The article is assuming that Windows 7 runs on these old PCs, not barely, but productively. Large files anyone?

It seems obvious that W7 needs the SSE2 instruction sets to prevent the stop errors that have plagued W7 since January/February 2018. This is possibly due to the changes that have been made in W7 to thwart Meltdown and Spectre. That's my guess.

I do not understand the outrage. Was it more due to Microsoft's sneaky way of handling it along with their lack of communicating the decision? That is, if it is a decision.

 

If someone is running a 20 year old PC with a decade old OS, it really is time to buy a new one. Really.

 

The one thing that I find here funny - people recommending Linux as a solution. Most distros don't support themselves 5 years down the road, stop supporting hardware way before Microsoft. For that matter, most distros don't offer 32-bit versions anymore - Windows 10 does. The same goes for drivers etc.

I don't think KB4345459 is a replacement for KB4338823, it is a fix for three issues in KB4338823.
And no, I'm sorry, I haven't installed KB4338823, as my systems are not hurt by the issues in KB4338823.

I have KB4338823 installed (x86 only) - had no problems with it either.

 

In that case, and if none of the three issues that KB4345459 says to fix apply to your system or systems, I wouldn't install KB4345459.
The July 18, KB4338821 Preview of Monthly Rollup, offers the same three fixes. So those fixes will probably be offered in the August 14 Rollup, also.

 

Did someone knows if this update: KB2952664, that seems enable telemetry in Seven ( https://support.microsoft.com/en-us...e-for-keeping-windows-up-to-date-in-windows-7 ) , was in Security Only Quality Update ? It seems not....

 

KB2952664 is not in the Security-only update (and not in the Monthly Rollup either).

You are correct, Microsoft's rating for KB2952664 is "Critical", you can see so in the Microsoft Update Catalog for KB2952664.
This is crazy, of course. I think there is nothing "Critical" about KB2952664, according to the info in the KB2952664 knowledge base information.
I think it's just the game that Microsoft is playing to keep pushing KB2952664. If they would offer it as an optional update, hardly anyone would install it.
Anyhow, KB2952664 is still a separate update, it is not included in the Security-only update (and not in the Monthly Rollup either).

 

That pesky KB 2952664 was included with other updates I saw for "Patch Tuesday"', and as before...I've hidden it once again. Microsoft just seems intent on using any means it can to get users to install it.

 

Yes, KB2952664 was offered together with "Important" updates, but not included in the Security-only update (or the Monthly Rollup) as blacknight asked. So everyone is free not to install and hide KB2952664 once again.

 

I still have not installed 8818 yet. It was pulled by MS and put back again this week.
