There are only two weeks to go before the start of the massive soccer event — FIFA World Cup. This championship has already attracted the attention of millions worldwide, including a fair few cybercriminals. Long before kick-off, email accounts began bulging with soccer-related spam, and scammers started exploiting the topic in mailings and creating World Cup-themed phishing pages.

Our statistics show spikes in the number of phishing pages during match ticket sales. Every time tickets went on sale, fraudsters mailed out spam and activated clones of official FIFA pages and sites offering fake giveaways allegedly from partner companies. But as the event draws nearer, cyber scams are reaching fever pitch. We present our observations below.

False contest to win jersey of the Brazilian team found on WhatsApp

With ten days to go before the FIFA World Cup begins in Russia cybercriminals are trying to take advantage of the event by tricking people into providing personal details or clicking on links that contain dangerous content.

An example of this was recorded in Brazil last week, when a fraudulent campaign circulated, mainly through WhatsApp, with a message claiming that Nike would be commemorated 22 years as the official kit manufacturer of the Brazilian National Football Team by giving away official shirts of the team. The only requirement to obtain the prize was that the users share the message.

Woohoo! The World Cup is coming! That’s what I would say if I wasn’t a stereotypical American who knows almost nothing about football (soccer to us Americans). Or a stereotypical security geek who knows almost nothing about our own handegg sporting events. I’m not really interested in either form of football. However, I am interested in understanding an event that draws interest from around the Internet and what it means to the security of the event, the organizations supporting it, and all the properties that have nothing to do with the event, yet somehow draw an attacker’s ire anyway.

World Cup Visitors Warned They Could Be Hacked By Russian Government

Soccer fans planning to travel to the World Cup in Russia are being warned that if they take any electronic devices with them they're liable to be hacked.

Experts in the US and the UK are advising that any data held on a mobile phone, tablet or laptop - including personal data - could be accessed by state-sponsored actors.

"Corporate and government officials are most at risk, but don’t assume you’re too insignificant to be targeted," director of the U.S. National Counterintelligence and Security Center William Evanina tells Reuters.

Social engineering campaigns for information theft
On some of the sports-streaming pages, once users enter, they are automatically redirected to other websites with social engineering campaigns that seek to trick them into stealing personal information. On some sites, just entering the browser automatically redirected us to two social engineering campaigns.

Miners on Streaming sites
During the searches we conducted we found websites where cryptocurrency mining was the main purpose. This is a growing phenomenon where sports and movie streaming sites have been used with increasing frequency.

Spambot Targets WordPress with Spray and Pray

Researchers at Imperva published their discovery of a new comment spam campaign that is leveraging the popularity of the World Cup to trick people into clicking on links that take them to shady betting sites.

The campaign, which mainly targets WordPress sites, is launched by a botnet and implemented in the form of comment spam. Despite its being one of the oldest tricks in the hacker’s book, comment spam is still pretty popular.

“In the weeks before the World Cup, the botnet had emphasized other, non-spam attacks, including unsuccessful attempts to invoke remote code execution (RCE) via PHP and to abuse unrestricted file upload to WordPress sites,” the researchers wrote.

“In this campaign, attackers are taking advantage of the popularity of the World Cup. Anyone who visits the betting sites could easily be duped into handing over sensitive information to attackers,” Azaria said.

Russia Fends Off 25 Million Cyber-Attacks During World Cup

Russia prevented nearly 25 million cyber-attacks and other criminal acts during the football World Cup, according to the Kremlin. The Moscow Times reported that Russian President Vladimir Putin praised the world of the country's security forces, along with international cooperation, ensuring a safe tournament.

During the World Cup, many organisations have come forward warning of potential risks to attending and non-attending fans. Researchers from McAfee warned fans to be wary of malicious apps and phishing emails created to specifically target football supporters.

It has also been reported that around 100 Israeli military individuals fell victim to a honeypot attack that came in the form of a malicious World Cup score tracking app and two fake online dating apps. They were available on Google Play.

Free streaming websites may appear an obvious choice in the search for a way to watch the big game. However, a number of them not only show stolen content, but actually act as bait to catch sporting fans unawares. In other words, they expose the viewers to a slew of risks, including malware downloads, personal data theft, and financial scams.

One thing to watch out for is ads. In fact, free live streaming sites are literally brimming with advertising that is not only annoying, but often outright malicious.
In some cases, dodgy sports streaming sites automatically redirect users to other websites that use social engineering in a bid to steal people’s personal data. As shown by our research in the run-up to last year’s FIFA World Cup, this could, for example, be a survey designed to steal people’s phone numbers and credit card details.

These are just some of the examples of the kinds of threats you can be exposed to when using streaming sites to watch major sporting events. Yet they serve to show that it may pays to be picky when choosing a way to watch the games.

Cyber security experts have warned of the risks faced by football fans hoping to watch England play the Netherlands in the semi-finals of the inaugural Uefa Nations League.
But regardless of whether people watch the game through legitimate or illegal methods, security experts warn that cyber criminals and hackers will attempt to capitalise on the game's popularity.

"Cyber criminals use these sites to target users by telling them they have malware on their machine, recommending they call a support number and during the phone call, installing software which allows them into the system. It’s from here that other damage can be done, whether that is stealing payment details or installing ransomware."
More surprisingly is the way hackers will trick fans into clicking on links that appear legitimate.

“Those who are trying to watch the game through legitimate means should also be aware of attackers using typo-squatted domains, or fake URLs, to host sites that look like the original and appear legitimate," Mr Woodruff said.
