"Kaspersky Total Security 2019 cleans misbehaving apps and browser extensions

Kaspersky has released major new versions of its security suites with the launch of Kaspersky Internet Security 2019 and Kaspersky Total Security 2019 for Windows PCs.

The suite -- which is also available (but not yet updated) on the Mac -- concentrates on improving and refining existing components, with highlights including support for removing troublesome applications and browser extensions.

EDIT: on their downloads page they are informing EU users to use EU-version downloader as it's compatible with GDPR.

 

I installed it and here are my first impressions:

Protection wise, they've added scripts scanning using AMSI. Great for Windows 10 users

Privacy related: during installation they ask you to agree with KSN statement and Statement about processing data for marketing purposes. Second option was not present in previous version and is probably related to GDPR. First one will enable or disable cloud (KSN). Each option has to be accepted with two clicks, first in install wizard and then in additional prompt. Both statements can be accepted or declined later through interface (Settings - Additional - Additional Protection and Management Tools):



Overall I like new changes and didn't encounter any problems so far. Good job Kaspersky

 

2018 is not even half done and Kaspersky is already out with a 2019 release?

 

As one of their testers I have been running it for quite some time. From my experience (YMMV) I consider this to be the best version they have ever released. Not one single issue or complaint.

So far I've found only one "problem" in Safe Money component, which was present in v. 18 also. It's about using password protected personal certificate for authentication. If you set up your certificate to ask you for password each time you want to use it, this won't function that way with browser in Safe Money. Safe Money will remember the password and won't ask you for it next time you try to use certificate. You have to restart computer before certificate is password protected again.
It's not a big problem but IMO still lowers the security of certificate usage. I reported it through Report a problem option.

 

2018 is done just fine for ages now.

You can call the 2019 version a 2018 version. All AV vendors with yearly version numbers release their next-year version early in the year. Naming the version after the next year gives the impression that you have the latest/greatest/advanced and other vendors can't stay behind with an older year version.

 

This new version appears to be the best release ever from Kaspersky; it is extremely light and nonintrusive on my machine, I simple dont feel the performance hit, meanwhile there are new technologies like scan scripts using AMSI and Self Defense with Microsoft System protected process technology.

Every protection module seems to be refined, default settings are much more agressive against PUPs/adwares and there is now special settings for privacy conscious users.

I dont know how the market will react against the Russian spy hysteria, but the product itself is a cut above the rest.

 

Did you unistall the previous version first or did you install it on top of the 2018 version?

 

This machine didnt had Kaspersky installed, but I always do a clean uninstall first.

I think it will have a small impact, but I think overall, because tech products are usually chosen by the more intelligent section of the population, media hype will have less of an effect on what is still recognised as the best AV in the world by many.

I know this is free but would still like to see a screenshot of any ads/offers/popups etc. on 2019 version and description of how often they appear and where.

So far I did not encounter any (similar as in 2018 version) although I have them all enabled.

 

Has anybody tried this on a low-end or older computer? I wonder if it would be light enough for my 2010 laptop (Win 7 64-bit, Dual core Pentium, 3 GB RAM), but I don't want to install it just yet.

 

I found the free version, to be too heavy for my liking. It may cause slowdowns on your computer, but it's best if you try it yourself, as performance will vary from one computer to the next.

If you try it and don't like it, Kasperksy have a removal tool you can download, which you can run after uninstalling it, to make sure that it is removed completely.

 

well to be fair everything compared to Panda is heavier, unless it's ESET.
Panda is as light as it is useless.

 

throw OSArmor and ESET on it and call it a day
that PC will be impacted by everything.
