"...Amazon wants to let strangers into your house and train a surveillance camera on your front door. Oh, and they’d like you to pay them $250 for the privilege...

Here’s how it works: Starting today, members of Amazon’s two-day delivery service can pre-order a kit [$250] that includes an Amazon security camera called the “Cloud Cam” and a compatible smart lock. Once you install the lock and the camera (inside your house! Within 25 feet of the door!), you’ll be able to access an “in-home” shipping option for your Amazon purchases. When a delivery driver arrives, Amazon will verify the address and time and let them in. Amazon Key owners will be able to watch them from their phones, as the camera records the whole thing. They plan to expand this access to professional service providers such as dog walkers and maids..."

"...Amazon's doing what it can to ensure that strangers don't game its system.

Chief among those steps: At no time does a password exchange hands. Instead, the day of your delivery you get a four-hour window to expect your package. Amazon confirms that the assigned driver is at the correct address at the intended time through an encrypted authentication process—scanning the package barcode bounces a request to the cloud, where software checks that the time, place, and package all line up. Amazon sends you a notification that delivery is imminent. The Cloud Cam kicks in, the door unlocks, and you can watch either in real-time or check back after to make sure that no one took the opportunity to fondle your fern.

The Cloud Cam, too, includes some functionality to help tone down the creep factor. A green LED lights up whenever it records. It only stores videos in the cloud for 24 hours by default, or longer if you purchase an accompanying monthly plan that allows playback for up to 30 days..."

No way would we do this, but there are fools who will love it. We're supposed to pay for the privilege of letting a perfect stranger into our home to deliver a package. Thanks, but no thanks. Leave it outside by the door, or at the post office.

It's supplying convenience, and for the majority of people, simple convenience trumps privacy or security.

I also think this is a ridiculous idea.

This is what enclosed front porches are for.

Anyone granting access inside their home to strangers, especially if not home themselves is just completely foolish.

I agree, and if they want you to pay $250 for this "service", it must be good.;)

It all comes down to when only drones do deliveries. It will open your front door on its final approach and crash through your picture window barely missing killing your cat. Place the package in the living room, then lock the front door as it gains altitude and returns to the mother-ship.

"Amazon: We're fixing flaw that leaves Key security camera open to Wi-Fi jamming...

Amazon is rushing out a fix for a flaw in the security camera that monitors couriers delivering parcels into the homes of Key customers...

An update coming later this week will provide users notifications if the camera goes offline during a delivery. The service will also not unlock the door if Wi-Fi is disabled and the camera is offline.

All Key couriers undergo a comprehensive background check that Amazon verifies before they can make in-home deliveries, the spokeswoman said. Additionally, Amazon links each delivery to a specific driver and checks that it is the right driver at the right address..."

Amazon Key In-Car Delivery - Amazon will now leave package deliveries in your parked car [car's trunk]

"Amazon has begun delivering packages in 37 cities to Prime members who own newer General Motors or Volvo vehicles...

Customers must download the Amazon Key app to which they can link a connected car...

Customers can track when their car was unlocked and relocked through the app..."

Amazon Key took over my door for 3 months. It wasn't as creepy as I expected
Not only did Amazon Key keep my front porch blissfully free of boxes, the in-home deliveries didn’t even freak me out.

If I was going to do all that I would put a little shed with the Amazon lock thing on the door so they can stay out of my house and put my deliveries in it.

And I would take the name 'SPOT' off the little shed and replace it with the name 'DEMON'.

Amazon Key in-home delivery shouldn't freak you out. Here's why
I'm not saying you shouldn't be cautious. But in-home delivery is less creepy than it seems.
