Blockchain Used To Track Gems To Counter Blood Diamonds And Fakes

Blockchain technology has been used in a pilot project to track diamonds from the mine to retail by South Africa’s De Beers Group, the world’s largest producer of diamonds.

The company has tracked 100 high-value diamonds along its entire value chain using an “immutable and secure digital trail [that] was created for a selection of rough diamonds mined by De Beers as they moved from the mine to cutter and polisher, then through to a jeweller” it said in a statement.

Don’t look at me like that. Work with me here. Imagine, just for a moment, that there exist plausible futures in which they matter.

An interesting question to ask is: what exactly do those futures look like? Because if we can’t come up with any compelling answers, then we may conclude, by reductio ad absurdum, that a cryptofuture is awfully unlikely. So let’s walk through a few scenarios, shall we? US: Seminole County Florida To Accept Crypto For Tax Payment

The Seminole County, Florida, tax collector Joel M. Greenberg announced May 14 that the county will begin accepting cryptocurrency for payment for various services this summer in order to eliminate heavy fees and improve payment accuracy and efficiency.

According to a press release, the county will begin accepting Bitcoin (BTC) and Bitcoin Cash (BCH) to pay for services, including property taxes, driver license and ID card fees, as well as tags and titles. The Seminole County Tax Collector will reportedly employ blockchain payments company BitPay, which will allow the county to receive settlement the next business day directly to its bank account in US dollars.

The Android-powered Exodus device will feature a universal wallet and hardware support for all major cryptocurrencies, including the likes of Bitcoin and Ethereum, as well as decentralised apps.

Blockchain technology should ensure extra security due to high-level encryption tools, as well as the ability to connect to superfast networks to ensure speedy transactions.

I'm inclined to believe Natalya Kaspersky knows what she's talking about. The US Government also appears to believe Kaspersky Labs knows more about their shenanigans than they would like them to lol

Moreover, MEWKit in some cases steals victims' wallet keys and exfiltrates them to the attacker's back end -- which means the thieves will continue to have the ability to steal additional funds if the attack goes unnoticed and no remedial action is taken.

“This attack demonstrates how actors are changing their tactics to target the unique vulnerabilities of cryptocurrency's surrounding services and implementations,” said Yonathan Klijnsma, RiskIQ threat researcher and report author, in a company press release. “MEWKit combines the tactics of both traditional phishing attacks and the functionality of an ATS for a tailor-made way to clear the relatively low barriers of MyEtherWallet.”

According to RiskIQ, MEWKit consists of an unofficial MyEtherWallet build -- likely manually downloaded from a repository like GitHub -- plus two added malicious JavaScript files, sm.js and wallet.js. The first script enables the phishing kit's back-end configuration (including wallet addresses for the receipt of stolen funds and data logs), while the second contains the core ATS functionality and hooks into the source of MyEtherWallet.

US and Canadian regulators open probes into cryptocurrency scams

"WASHINGTON, D.C. (May 21, 201 – The North American Securities Administrators Association (NASAA) today announced one of the largest coordinated series of enforcement actions by state and provincial securities regulators in the United States and Canada to crack down on fraudulent Initial Coin Offerings (ICOs), cryptocurrency-related investment products, and those behind them.

NASAA members from more than 40 jurisdictions throughout North America participated in “Operation Cryptosweep,” which to date has resulted in nearly 70 inquiries and investigations and 35 pending or completed enforcement actions related to ICOs or cryptocurrencies since the beginning of May. NASAA members are conducting additional investigations into potentially fraudulent conduct that may result in additional enforcement actions.

These actions are in addition to more than a dozen enforcement actions previously undertaken by NASAA members regarding these types of products. Many NASAA members also are conducting public outreach initiatives to warn investors in their jurisdictions of the risks associated with ICOs and cryptocurrencies..."
