Same here with Windows 7 x64.
I installed KB4103718, May 8, 2018, Monthly Rollup for Windows 7, and KB4099633, Security and Quality Rollup for .NET Framework for Windows 7, and didn't notice any problems so far.

Could the Spectre and Meltdown patches have caused these problems?

I have had the dreaded black screen appear in a few past Win 10 1709 cum. updates. Each time it happened, I just did a hardware initiated restart and booted into Win 10 w/o issue. Also, the issue on subsequent reboots did not appear.

In the last Win 10 1709 cum. update and this first 1803 cum. update, I was greeted upon reboot after installation with the black screen but with a popup window in the top left portion of the desktop stating that Windows is personalizing my settings. Whatever the f*** that is. The popup window disappeared 10 - 20 secs later and my regular desktop appeared. This activity only occurs once after the cum. update has completed installation activities.

Appears to me that if something internally is borked with your Win 10 desktop settings and only God knows what those may be, these frozen black screen issues will occur.

    hawki's PC <------- BORKED BY Win 1083 Update :-(

Is there any way to prevent updating to The WIN 10 Spring Feature Update (Win 1083) ??

    Details:

    1. Got the Tuesday Cumlative Update last night = NP

    2. Downloaded and "Installed" WIN 1083 Update

    3. "Complete" - All appeared fine

    4. On Restart - 3 seconds after the boot screen PC Restarted again

    5. PC said "Restoring Prior Version of Windows."

    6. Restore completes - Restart --> NADA = Black Screen

    7. Restoration of image failed a couple of times.

    8. Reset of Windows with Recovery USB Fails

    9. Refresh of Windows, e.g. Clean Install results in WIN 8.1 and staring at 186+ Wndows Updates and the prospect/concern of not being able to get WIN 10 for free.

    10. Installed Acronis TI into Win 8.1 --Back to Backup done immediately before the updates. = Success.

So I just got the Cumulative Update again - I thought there were two updates before WIN 1083 -- WRONG -- Currently installing WIN 1083 again (Thought I would have time top to this before WIN 1083 started downloading :-(

    Fingers Crossed

I wonder what hardware is involved in the black screen issues. I'm up to 15 PCs on the 1803 update, ranging in age from 10 years to brand new, not a single issue so far. A mixture of Intel, AMD, and NVidia graphics. I think they are all Intel CPUs. Don't forget they turn Fast Startup back on with every one of these updates (1803, 1709, etc.) so if it causes you issues remember to turn it off.

You might be "on to something" in regards to graphic drivers.

After my Win 10 1803 upgrade, I decided to do some PC housecleaning. Low and behold, I actual had two nVidia display drivers installed; the recent Windows based one which is .395 and .390. How the hell that occurred is beyond me. It was my understanding that these Win 10 upgrades install all new drivers and remove any old in existence. Appears that is not the case anymore.

It wouldn't surprise me if it were the cause of at least some of the issues. I couldn't run 1709 on 3 PCs, 1 because of graphics drivers and 2 for Wi-Fi drivers. I expect something similar here.

Hey itman, I have seen BOTH upgraded drivers with 1803 and NO upgraded drivers with 1803. No real clue what the difference might be however. I have personally upgraded 22 machines to 1803 with no problems during install or afterwards; these include a mixture of AMD and Intel CPUs covering both ends of the perform spectrum. I have carefully inspected (and updated them as needed) the sound, video, Bluetooth, and network drivers on all of these systems as well after upgrading to 1803.

Actually what I posted previously wasn't correct. I had two drivers of the same ver. installed; i.e. 390.65. I installed the original ver. in Jan. via nVidia web site download since this ver. included the Spectre fix.

It should be noted that the Microsoft ver. of nVidia drivers are "santitized" versions; primarily the nVidia telemetry crap is neutered, etc.. So the upgrade issues might occur when a previous ver. of the same upgrade driver exists.

    Sooo Anywayz....

After 1803 was "100% installed" I first decided to wait before I restarted so that I would for sure have use of my PC during the day. I selected from the Windows Update Settings the Restart Option that basically says "nevermind I'll restart it myself when I feel like it."

Then I changed my mind and decided to get it over with, so I did an "everyday-Restart" from the Start/Windows button. I was very happy when my PC restarted without a hitch. Then I went to the Windows Update Settings and discovered my PC did not update. In Win Update History 1803 is there but it says "needs a restart to finish installing," and at the top of the Win Update settings page the "restart" button is still there.

Thinking I'm gonna wait -- I may never turn off my PC again.

Did you verify what ver. is actually currently installed?

"First Patch Tuesday update for Windows 10 version 1803 is reportedly bricking some PCs

Yesterday, users who installed the Windows 10 April 2018 Update got their first cumulative update from Microsoft. These updates were meant to address some issues with Remote Desktop and App-V Scripts, but it is also apparently causing some users to experience black screens when booting up their PCs (via Windows Latest.)

The issue is well documented on the Microsoft Answers forum, ...

...those who did experience the issue needed to boot Windows 10 into safe mode via a CD or USB installer, try uninstalling the update, restoring back to the Fall Creators Update or restoring via a system restore point...."

I'm glad I was spared that on the machines that have upgraded to 1803.

Have had a few of those, but in the past as well.
    +1
On one (oldest) machine, K4103721 WU rolled back, but direct install from MS Catalog worked.

Edit: Dunno if it's normal but in update history it was then listed as 'Security Update for Windows' instead of '2018-05 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1803 for x64-based Systems'.

Someone asked me this question in another forum in regards to the Win 10 1803 May updates.

They did not receive the Flash Player security update. I verified I also did not receive it. Has anyone verified that this update was included in the Win 10 1803 Feature Upgrade delivered on May 1?

The Flash Player security update is separate and was not included in the WIN 1083 Spring Update.

Did you receive the update via Win Updates?

I have not yet restarted my PC to fully install WIN 1083 so I will not be getting subsequent updates until after the time that I do :-(

I have a few time sensitive matters I need my PC for so I will wait till they are completed before risking my PC getting borked by 1083 again.

I find it annoying the number of articles that refer to "bricking" when they do not know what it means. If you can recover from it by reinstalling or restoring a backup it is not a brick. Anything for a headline I guess.
