"'World of Warcraft' Hacker Sentenced to Federal Prison...

A Romanian man who was extradited to the United States to face federal charges of launching a cyber attack on the Irvine-based servers of the online role-playing game "World of Warcraft" was sentenced Monday to a year in federal prison.

Calin Mateias, 38, of Bucharest, launched a distributed denial-of-service -- DDoS -- attack on Warcraft owners Blizzard Entertainment's servers in 2010 after the company provided access to the game to European players and Mateias became involved in disputes with other players...

'"Angered by a player he regularly competed against, the defendant determined to defeat his WoW opponents by interrupting the game's server so they could not access the game,' according to a defense sentencing memorandum..."

"New Mexico Man Sentenced to 15 Years in Prison for Directing [DDoS] Computer Attacks Against Websites of Dozens of Victims...

A New Mexico man was sentenced today in St. Paul, Minnesota, for directing computer attacks against the websites of his prior employers, business competitors and public services, and felon-in-possession of a firearm charges...

Gammell admitted that he caused DDoS attacks by using computer programs on his own computers, as well as by directing “DDoS-for-hire” companies from which he purchased services to launch the DDoS attacks. Gammell purchased subscriptions to multiple DDoS-for-hire companies, including VDoS, CStress, Inboot, Booter.xyz, and IPStresser. He initiated attacks using these DDoS-for-hire companies against dozens of victims, including but not limited to Washburn Computer Group, the Minnesota State Courts, Dakota County Technical College, Minneapolis Community and Technical College, the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office, and others..."

"Inside the Takedown of a Notorious Malware Clearinghouse [Scan4You]...

In summer 2012, Trend Micro researchers noticed some unusual activity cropping up on their threat-tracking scanner. The researchers had been investigating a malware distribution tool called "g01pack." They realized that a group of Latvian IP addresses kept checking g01pack-related URLs against Trend Micro’s web reputation system—a tool that tracks web activity and can block malicious websites for customers. Digging deeper, the researchers discovered that the Latvian IP addresses were actually initiating these checks for all sorts of URLs. The researchers were looking at a goldmine of information about the inner workings of a notorious malware checker..."
