Interesting. I also tested it and it did indeed pick up things Google’s Safe Browsing missed. This extension is only 295KB and has no impact on the browser performance. This might be worth having.

I agree, SmartScreen is quite good in malware&phishing blocking, but right now it was available on IE and Edge only.
To have it in Chrome is really a good news :)

The extension icon doesn't change whether or not it is enabled or disabled. This is different from my other extensions.

Actually, I hid the icon from the toolbar, so I wasn't aware of that

This is quite interesting. I was worried when it said "Windows Defender" but once several of you mentioned SmartScreen extended for Chrome/Chromium, in that case I will give it a try.

At least their test page is blocked in Chrome again now.

Is there a test page, besides the one the Krusty posted, that I can try?

I installed it earlier today. I did some testing form phishtank and it missed most of them. Granted they were fresh links so I dunno. uBlock did indeed miss them as well so there's that.

Can anyone confirm whether or not this extension requires smartscreen.exe running locally on the machine or does this extension work independently?

I went to phishtank website and I filtered the results to show only "verified phishes" and "online", then I sorted them from the most recent. I tried to reach the top 5 websites, but all of them were blocked
I don't think this extension is meant to block downloads, Windows Defender Antivirus will do that
I think the extension works on the cloud, so it's independent from Windows, IE and Edge SmartScreen

I just tried the extension running Cloudready OS, and it did not block any pish from pishtank.

So it depends on Windows components

Non of the latest sites where blocked by uBlock, nor Chrome either

This almost sounds like a joke to me. I mean, Windows Defender can be designed and implemented in such a way that all apps and the OS (kernel space + user space) be protected by WD. Why the need for a separate browser addon?

Because some people (including myself) don't like Windows Defender real-time protection, I have read of many users complaining of slowdowns when trying to open a folder with several exe files.
If Microsoft offer an option to use Windows Defender as a cloud only AV (so, without a local signature database), I may think about using it, but so far is a no-go for me

I think it's nothing more of what they already collect from Windows OS and Microsoft account :)
