The vendors have so good products these days that it doesn't make any practical difference what you choose in terms of anti-malware capabilites. These tests are becoming more and more irrelevant.

I assume you meant 'turning off protection'? Probably to test them against zero-day malware. And signature detection can get in the way of that.
Yep. Most products work reasonably well and all of them can fail. Use the one you like best or that causes the least amount of trouble for the PC you install it on.
