@bo elam. Interesting and you are not having any problems. Would you do me a favor and open a command prompt, enter ...

    ipconfig /all

check if your DHCP is enabled or disabled.

    Yes, no issue at all.

DHCP is Enabled. What do that tell you? Am I supposed to be having problems?

Since I don't have the registry key in W7 (and dont want to add it), since January I update my W7 by downloading the security only package from the catalogue. So, I don't know if WU would be offering KB4099950 when I check for updates. Whats your opinion, should I download it and install it via catalogue? Or, leave things alone.

    Bo,
DHCP Yes (Enabled) - you are getting a dynamic IP address from the router.
If it says No (Disabled), that's a static IP.

That means you are not affected by the network problems caused by the January update. All is good for you. You do not need to install KB4099950 as it is only required for those with static IPs that got reassigned by the January update. Also, don't worry about PCI.SYS - it does not affect you.

    Thanks, Emmjay.

Perhaps you can explain, if my IP is Dynamic, why is it that the webpage I linked says it is Static?

Also, what about the future. I know today I dont need KB4099950 but what about in the future. Do you know if doing the update after having installed KB4088878 first.does any good or bad.

    Bo

I thought that this problem with static IP being changed affected only some users? Personally I always use static IP on my systems and I didn't get any problems on my Windows 7 with my settings after updates were installed. I checked when I heard news about it, but my torrent traffic was still redirected correctly :)

I'll try to explain, as best I can.

It's possible for your DHCP server (router) to set a static IP to a certain computer within your LAN (typically 192.168.x.x), but not your WAN.
It is also a possibility that you are using an address outside the DHCP range on your router for the W10 device and that is why it is static. You could also have set up a DHCP reservation for that device. It all comes down to setup.
    - That is why I asked you to do the command prompt from your W7/32 device.

Edit: I removed one paragraph on my original reply because it had an error. I apologize for that.

@bo elam. It is also possible that the March update changed your settings. This is described in the known issues section of KB4099950. If you are not concerned by this and all is running well, I'd say let things stay as they are.

Update: Microsoft has revised the March update April 5, but it looks as though it is a meta data only change.

    - the kb article has been revised on April 5, 2018. Microsoft added the section dealing with the SESSION_HAS_VALID_POOL_ON_EXIT bug

The April monthly rollup will have KB4099950 rolled up into this update, but as the security-only updates are not cumulative, you still have to download and install it from the catalog. AFAIK !

What is happening with March 13, 2018—KB4088878 (Security-only update) ?

It was last revised on 5 April 2018 .

I see in the Known issues in this update :
As far as I know that was not previously mentioned there.
As I read it: KB4099950 is now included in the revised KB4088878 .

    But:
I just downloaded KB4088878 again from the MS catalog.
For the Win 7 64-bit version (that I use) the checksums are exactly the same as the ones for the version I downloaded on 13 March 2018.
In case anyone would like to check it, here you go:
The file windows6.1-kb4088878-x64_59e25abf3a0c18f9fab5128bad26d3311bedd2d6.msu has the following Checksum(s)
    MD5 - 5401FCC817FD5D1BDC493AFE09C1E4B5
    SHA-160 - 59E25ABF3A0C18F9FAB5128BAD26D3311BEDD2D6
    SHA-256 - 933011D9D5AB9BAF2F7DCC66440BAA385FA4EBA0611D5D5E4E95C9A513769AC4

This cannot be true, or I am misunderstanding things:
It was changed (KB4099950 is now included) and the checksums are still the same ...

    So what is happening here?

I doubt installing the March Update is the reason for the link showing my IP as Static when is not as the page shows same information for my W10 and W7.

What I like to know is, Is it OK to install KB4099950 after having installed KB4088878?

In an earlier reply I said to you, What about the future? The thing about the future has to do with, if I travel to another country and the IPs are Static there? Am I going to have problems because I don't have KB4099950?

I think I am going to go back to how I am used to doing updates in W7, do them a few days before the next round is released. Its rare for me to ponder about Windows update, last time was when Service pack 3 came out for XP but this March updates to me are very confusing on how to properly handle them.

It is possible that KB4099950 can not fix the NIC issue after KB4088878 is installed and you have rebooted. The reason for this is that the pci.sys version would be higher than the version that KB4099950 checks for. The script was updated twice by Microsoft. The original shows the PCI version.

My PCI.SYS (6.1.7601.24056) version is higher. If I recall correctly, the Timestamp of the file was February 2018. I am going to start my W7 to verify the timestamp, if I dont edit this post, then the timestamp is as I just posted.

Edit: Oh well, the PC shows the file as being modified in February but when I hover the browser over the file it displays March 17 as the date of creation. The date and time shown is when I ran the Security only update that I downloaded from the catalogue. So, the update updated the file in my laptop.

In Windows Update on Windows 7 x64, I notice that KB4099950, of which the KB article says "Important This update must be installed before you install KB4088875 or KB4088878", is now offered as 'recommended' update, even though KB4088875 is already installed earlier.

N.B. 'Recommended' in Windows Update means that with the default Windows Update settings "Install updates automatically" and "Give me recommended updates the same way I receive important updates" a 'recommended' update will be installed automatically.
That means that with default Windows Update settings KB4099950 would be installed automatically, even though the KB4099950 article KB article says "Important This update must be installed before you install KB4088875 or KB4088878" and KB4088875 is already installed earlier!

Yes, you're right: I too get KB4099950 now offered as important via WU on my Win 7 64-bit. (I do the security-only updates and KB4088878 is already installed here).
    Strange ...

This is what I did with KB4099950. I uninstalled KB4088878, rebooted a couple of times and tested, all was well. Removing KB4088878 rolled back my PCI.SYS to version 6.1.7601.17514. Then I turned off the laptop for a while. After restarting it, I installed KB4099950, tested. rebooted a couple of times, all seemed perfect and turned off the laptop. After a while, restarted the laptop again and reinstalled KB4088878. The update updated PCI.SYS back to 6.1.7601.24056. Tested, rebooted, all seems well, thanks Emmjay. :)

Guess I'll give it a go. Have uninstalled security updates back to Dec./17 and like Bo, my PCI.SYS is back to 6.1.7601.17514 after the uninstallments. Going to install KB4099950 first and then KB4088878. Thanks emmjay for the info..

EDIT: Did the above security installations and all is well. PCI.SYS now reads 6.1.7601.24056

The way I read this article was if you have installed one of the above-mentioned updates and then manually restored the adapters, you have to uninstall the update. Afterward, install the new update KB4099950 and then KB408875 or KB408878.
Since I had not experienced any issues before and not uninstalled anything, I just installed the latest patch and everything is still fine (knock on wood).

I did not install the March Rollup 8875 i think it was before MS removed it because of early reported issues with it. I guess that means i don't have to uninstall any rollups or run KB4099950 before i skip the March Rollup and eventually install the April Rollup.

As far as Win 10 1709 April cumulative update goes, I was greeted with dreaded black screen hung popup on Windows Update is configuring your desktop settings. A reboot straightened that out.

Of note was I left Metered Connection disabled afterwards and received on subsequent reboot significant downloads from MS provisioning servers. Suspect that this is the new Spring release being downloaded in sections.

No issue after installing KB4093112 this morning in my W10 (1709 16299.371). Also, got a new Servicing stack (KB4099989) installed at the same time.

    I ll do April's updates in my W7..........in a month. :)

The article for 'recommended' update KB4099950 for Windows 7 says it must be installed before installing March KB4088875 Rollup or March KB4088878 Security-only update. There is no reference to any need to install it before the April Rollup or April Security-only update. Nevertheless, I decided to install KB4099950 before I installed KB4093118, the April 10, Monthly Rollup.

On both my Windows 7 x64 systems, first, I installed 'recommended' update KB4099950 and rebooted, and then installed KB4093118, April 10, 2018, Monthly Rollup.
Updates completed with no issues, and all looks well.

I installed 9950 a few days ago because i did not install the March 8875 update yet. I will wait a few weeks to see if any problems show up with the April 3118 update before i install it.

Do they start to push Spring 1803 update this month? Has anyone received it via Windows Update?

If that's the case, I might stop using auto update and update manually from now on, because for the moment I'm planning to stay on 1709.
