My home office computer is protected because I run a virtual operating system. When I go offline the entire system is replaced with a clean copy. The process takes less than 5 minutes, so if I don't like what's happening online I go offline and flush the system. I must download and save files. Usually, they are scanned thoroughly in the cloud before downloading. I really don't like "cloud" anything, so I needed a basic virus scanner app. ClamWin was a good choice, but its become a nightmare. Google about problems downloading ClamWin and its definition updates. Dozens of completely unreliable mirrors. If you manage to download a new version of ClamWin, there is a good chance the package is corrupt. I've downloaded the latest version (0.99.4) three times. The install failed each time because of file corruption. I need a very basic file scanner app. I don't need all the protective features offered by free versions of apps like Avast. I want to manually download all definition updates. That's why I liked ClamWin. Is there another simple virus scanner that might be a good substitute for ClamWin?
Lemon- Absolutely nothing can match ClamWin; but sadly absolutely everything surpasses it. Give FortiClient (Free) a try.
Emsisoft has a free command-line scanner. It’s part of their EEK product: https://www.emsisoft.com/en/software/eek/
Immunet is cloud based, uses ClamWin, and is developed by Cisco. Their website states to, "never download another file detection file and stay up-to-date by staying connected to the Immunet cloud." You might want to look into it.
Nothing beats the cloud. So why not make use of many scaners, without having to upload most of the downloaded files? VT-HashCheck: http://www.boredomsoft.org/vt-hash-check.bs Other then the name implies, it checks VT results and more. It only takes a few seconds, to get the results of +50 scanners.
You funny! Went to BOOTS pharmacy Saturday for my monthly prescriptions, luckily they'd bagged the meds on friday, as their central computer system was down and they couldn't connect to their 'cloud' to do anything. no purchasing, billing, no cards, nothing. people were coming in and being told to come back later. I got mine tho. Nothing beats the cloud except a stand alone system that can work off line w/o the interweb.
