I have a couple of old drives with Win XP on them that I had put the registry hack on to keep getting the POS updates. Worked great while I was using them somewhat regularly. I haven't turned them on in close to a year and am finding they just keep searching and searching for updates at 100% CPU without finding anything. I have also tried the Win Minitool with the same luck. I have read where most with XP and the hack are still getting their updates. I did check that the registry hack is still installed which it is. Is there something I missed in the last year that will resume getting updates? The update has been running for 3-4 hours, maybe I'm not giving it enough time?
I had similar problem on Xp in VM. For me solution was to download latest Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 8 from Microsoft Update Catalog and install it manually. After that I could search for other updates and install them. You can get latest IE update from here: https://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=posready . Just sort results by Last Updated and it should near the top.
@bcsman Just tested POS updates and had no issues. Downloads became available within minutes not hours so definitely something is wrong. Have you made any changes to your system that may be preventing these updates? Check your firewall logs and maybe WindowsUpdate.log file. NOTE: I do not have any version of Internet Explorer installed. Not needed for updates. AFAIK Microsoft hasn't pulled the plug on reg hack and POS should still receive updates until 2019.
Yes, maybe my wording was not clear enough. IE is not needed and I didn't use IE to search and install updates. For me it was Automatic update service eating up 100% of CPU without finding any updates. It could take for hours and nothing was found, just CPU running at max speed. So I stopped AU service, manually download and install IE update and restarted AU service. After that updates were found in a minute and installed without problems. This happen two times to me so far, so that's why I suggested this workaround.
@Minimalist If you have IE browser installed then most likely you'll need the cumulative security update. Now the problem with svchost.exe taking 100% CPU during Windows Update should be resolved. Since I didn't have IE browser installed all that was needed was setting Automatic Updates in Control Panel to ' Notify me ' and of course BITS on. No workaround was necessary in my case.
Holy cow you guys are the best!! Just d/l the latest IE8 Cumulative Update, rebooted, turned on AU to notify and as you said, new updates available in maybe one minute! I have been goofing around for hours trying to figure this out and now fixed in minutes, I can't say thanks enough. I have a couple other XP drives I will also fix up and things will be rolling again.
Did this to another XP drive and it found 101 updates! Guess I haven't checked that one in a few days...lol
