As long as Windows can be customized, I am fine with it. I ditched Pro for Home on purpose, I like the challenge, considering that MS is gradually degrading Pro to Home anyway.

@emmjay, it seems that you believe W10 will still be the current version of Windows in 2020 - what makes you believe that?

As for me, I'm tired of Microsoft's antics re Windows version updates, so I voted for Linux (since that's where I'm going with my XP desktop) ...but I don't have to make that decision for another 2 years! ;)

I believe that Microsoft announced that Windows 10 will be the last Windows ever. Guess I have to take them at their word.
Though they have been known to change their mind :D

'Modes' might be the next big thing. What mode will be your preference in 2025 when W10 is eol ? :p

    LOL :argh:
I've got to believe the last thing Microsoft wants is to stop with a version of Windows for a single payment (at best) - remembering that a great many got W10 free! Do you really believe that Microsoft will provide never-ending years of free development and tech support (for W10)? That would be a disastrous business model - especially considering W10 was distributed free to many thousands of W7 & W8.1 users and is now readily available on 'pirate sites'!

People will be paying for Windows 10 when they buy a new computer, with it preinstalled. Also, the free upgrade licenses are only for the computer you upgraded, so you can't build a new desktop and use an existing free Windows 10 license.

I'm sticking with Win 8.1 as long as this laptop holds up. It's 3 yrs old, so ought to be good through 2020. I figure I'll be 75 then, so am counting on still being around and not drooling, forgetting my name, etc.

Dont worry about forgetting your name, or anything else for that matter, you can be sure the internet, the nsa and most all of the global tech corps have you covered, lol

LOL........I'm sure they know. Win 8.1 is almost Windows 10 anyway, minus all the garbage MS cluttered up 10 with, some of which I understand can't be removed.

Win 8.1 was still quite sane, at least you could avoid the silly tiled desktop if you wanted to. 10 is pretty much a 3 Ring Circus... but I'm using it just the same... :)

Don't see a reason to stay on W8.1, especially if you dislike telemetry. At least with Windows 10 telemetry actually serves to give you better protection.

I dropped Windows for primary use ages ago. I do have a virtual machine running Windows 7 and a old P4 machine running Windows XP at a membership club I am finance officer for.

I've been using Windows more or less my entire life. Ubuntu never stuck for me but I'm planning on giving it another try with the introduction of Snaps for the default programs in 18.04

I guess Im the only one so far to vote for it, but my favorite multipurpose OS right now is Android.

    Privacy implications and all?

Yes because I believe any privacy issues in Android are common to every other. The low level issues such as web tracking etc can be mitigated in Android by the use of privacy apps.
Other than that, when you consider, firstly if you live in a five eyes country, our governments have made it quite clear surveillance is policy and they expect to have access to all our data.
Secondly they have between them, hundreds of billions of dollars to spend on achieving that.
So whatever the OS, I think it is safe to say it has been infiltrated and subverted to facilitate network based intrusion one way or another, as is the device hardware.

I play a lot of games on my computer (I have high-end gaming hardware too) so I use Windows 10 for obvious reasons. Linux is not an alternative at this time. I hope with the growing support for Vulkan (API) that I can migrate to open source Linux by 2020, but I doubt it as the pace is right now.

It's rather odd I never transitioned or even looked on Windows 7 except on occasion if someone else was using it or a bank-business or other institution.

I know for a fact is was a welcome step up for many previously on XP like myself, however I held on to XP until Windows 8 and am not a bit disappointed with that decision.

You probably will. Drink a glass of red wine every day. Even if it doesn't keep you alive it sure goes good with home made burgers grilled over pecan wood. ;)
