I have no malware to test it, but this laptop is for travel and have very low specs, like only 2 GB Ram so this is no test machine ;)
I think i will remove BD and go for Kaspersky free which is more light, for this low specs laptop.

Installed on Windows 8.1, got "The connection to the server has failed, the product could not be activated. Check the connection and try again".

After a while I noticed an upgrade ad, so I clicked that, and it downloaded a file called something like bitdefender_online, which isnt a free version, it is a paid one.

Is there still a free version of this available?

So it's fixed? Very nice. :thumb:

@taosk8r, free version should work on Win 8.1 as well. :doubt:

I have no idea as I have not tested it again. The files were detected when I did manual scans, but were not detected when I opened them in Explorer.

Thanks, turns out I had unintentionally installed the free trial previously, and it needed an reboot to finish deinstalling, so the free one wouldn't allow an install.

The registry hack to turn off webshield doesn't work any more, I guess there is nothing we can do ... No way to contact Iulika from Bitdefender, is he still alive?

It is probably due to the scanning of SSL, which I believe this free version does not provide option to disable. You may try of removing the 's' from HTTPS in the site url and see if that fixes it.

I keep getting warning from Windows that no antiviruses are on, few minutes after booting my laptop and i have to manually enable bd free...

I guess it's back to Windows Defender, because at least it works on Windows :argh:

I think it's time to replace your old computer Phoenix, no performance problems with Windows Defender here. :thumb:

It's a known problem and therefore I don't trust an Antivirus which is unable to start itself. :D

Decisions, decisions, do i use antivirus that doesn't start automatically or do i use antivirus that "might" slow down my computer... :D

I really liked BD Free, but these damn bugs are annoying.

I really like Bitdefender Free but I don't want to use it with faulty slowdown-webshield. Why is it so difficult to give us an option to disable it, I will never ever understand it ... :(

Just dropping by to report Bitdefender Free behaving strange on two machines, taskbar icon missing, OS unresponsive (cursor responding, but OS not interacting). After reset everything is fine... Until it happens again, not often but happened several times during the last few weeks. This is on two different machines, hardware is tested and OK. There is no malware infection, tested several times with on-demand scanner.

On third computer using the old Bitdefender Free, there are no issues. I am moving to another product now, but I wanted to share this.

Gotta agree with that... One day after uninstalling Bitdefender Free (and I also used their Internet Security before), I can only say that my system now seems at least twice faster with another product, especially browsing. :(

Uninstalled Bitdefender on another computer because of similar problems, Bitdefender should sell the engine and close their company.
