Webapps for regularly visited websites because it blocks all connections to third party domains by default. (The holy grail feature for blocking ads, data mining and tracking while saving bandwidth that no other browser will implement)
I also use noroot firewall to prevent other unwanted outbound connections.

NoRoot Firewall seems a bit like VoodooShield on Windows, right?

I've just installed it and will give it a shot to see how I like it. So far it's OK.

Thanks for bringing it up, @RockLobster . :thumb:

PS: Since I hardly ever use my Android phone I haven't read the rest of this thread so if NoRoot Firewall has been mentioned before, my apologies.

Not really, it creates a VPN so that you can filter content on every app

went from ESET to Kaspersky to Norton to Trend Micro to Emsisoft
    problems:
ESET: bad protection results, lack of features, bugs out with non-default keyboard
    Kaspersky: lack of features
Norton: eats the battery and memory like a ************, I almost replaced my phone but decided to do some cleaning, also Norton Cleaner and Norton Applock, same problem, and Applock is buggy af too.
Trend Micro: after a while stops updating and just keeps throwing :"unsuccessful update", reinstall solves it but reinstalling it daily lol.. oh and on High settings, it literally has 90% false positive rate.
Emsisoft: lightest AV of all(80-86 mb in past 3 hours), running it for a week without issues, tho I miss having an indicator about signature updates and no scheduled scans but the "Cloud scan" suggests they might not have local signatures.

You are right, it creates a fake vpn using a loopback interface in the phone. Traffic is then filtered by noroot in a similar way to an application based firewall. It is really quite effective and simple to use except with browsers and websites that try to initiate 30 simultanious and spurious connections at the same time. It is difficult to figure out which ones to let noroot block.
Thats why I use webapps to block them all initially and then test to see which if any are neccessary.
For example site.com might initiate 25 connections, one might hold their images so allow that one and then save the config for that site in webapps. Links outside the allowed domains wont open in webapps but give the option to open in the regular web browser.
Not all sites work in webapps due to some scripts on the site but lots do.
    Of course Wilders works perfectly.
Webapps has some quirks like it has a very strict site cert policy. If there is the slightest thing wrong with a sites cert or its cert chain it just wont load that page, period. No "proceed regardless" option like most browsers have. Probably a good thing though when you think about it.

Adguard eats battery and its pointless, just set their DNS and it's the same.

    Thanks for the suggestion.
As for battery, in my case it barely has any impact on battery, as of this moment my battery is 56% and adguard has used only 1% of it (17 mAh). I also like the app's firewall feature.
For their dns, Last time I used it was noticeably slow. I will give it another try.
If you let me ask, are you using their DNS? does it provide the same blocking capabilities of their app? by having a quick look at their websites there doesn't seem to be anything mentioning if there's a rip off.

Until a week ago I was one of the few still using a 'dumb' phone. A number of my acquaintances are now using whatsapp, so I felt a bit pressured and bought a HUAWEI P10 Lite.
I have installed Opera (not Mini) and also Opera VPN for Android which also comes with a built in ad tracker blocker. What do you think of the app?

    https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.opera.vpn&hl=en

Opera VPN blocks ad trackers and lets you change your virtual location. Unblock more content and access your favorite websites and apps from anywhere - completely free.

    With Opera VPN, you get:
    • One of the fastest, most reliable VPN services
    • Unblocked access via your choice of five virtual locations (with more coming soon)
    • The ability to determine WiFi network security level, as well as connection encryption and protection from threats
    • A built-in ad tracker blocker to stop advertisers from following you around the web

(I really can't stand smart phones and am certainly not going to do my banking on it).

I agree. However lately their DNS has not been fully blocking ads, so for the first time in a long time, I have reinstalled their app. The nice thing about it is that it also helps cosmetically clean up the sites you are on. Using just DNS does not do that as it leaves huge spaces of white and gray. Not saying I will keep it forever but for now I will. I just wish it was not as much of a battery hog as it is.

I have no issues with it tbh.
well to be honest their app could show whatever battery usage they want to. i just know that my battery was draining, but it could have been the other pesky apps.

They can't control what Android shows for battery usage.

go in the app and read what it says about the battery usage. they have their own battery usage inside the app for the reasons explained there...
