Here's my long, detailed review of Xubuntu 17.10 Artful Aardvark, tested in a dual-boot configuration on a laptop with Nvidia graphics, covering live session, installation and day-to-day use, including look & feel, networking - Wireless, Bluetooth, Samba sharing, printing, multimedia support - HD video and MP3 playback, partitioning, slideshow, software and updates, applications and extras, fonts, customization, performance, responsiveness, resource usage, smartphone support - Android and Windows Phone, proprietary drivers, hardware compatibility with issues around suspend & resume and webcam, various application crashes, some other problems, and more. Have fun.

@mrkv, I just discovered your Xubuntu 17.10 review, which was very timely as i've been considering a 'lightweight' Linux distro for our 14 year old (Win XP) PC which will become our son's first computer! Having read your thoughts about Xubuntu, I'm now giving consideration to Bodhi, Linux Lite, or Peppermint - do you have any thoughts about those on a legacy PC?

Try MX-17 - it comes with Xfce - and a review coming soon.

I'm curious about your take on MX 17, it has been receiving the highest praises.

    Unfortunately, it's not light enough for a Pentium 4 (2.0 GHz)! :(

    Hi JoAnn,

Your situation is very similar to mine this past summer. My 11-year old son wanted his own computer so I gave him my 2004 HP desktop. Since it had obsolete Windows XP on it one of his teachers suggested that he install Bodhi Linux. Well, I was amazed that he was able to do that (successfully) just by following Bodhi's instructions. Kids are so technically savvy nowadays! Once Bodhi was up and running I was very impressed with how responsive my old PC was performing (quicker than XP ever was)! 6-months have gone by and my son is very happy with his "refurbished" computer.

Hope this is helpful in your decision process.

Cruise, thanks for that - what a coincidence! I'll certainly tell my son about your son's success in replacing Windows XP with Bodhi Linux.

Mrk, please accept my apology for (unintentionally) hijacking your thread ...JA
