Luckily, Windows Update came back to work in the end.

 

Patch Tuesday November 14, I wrote,

Today, I installed KB4049016 for .NET Framework on my two Windows 7 x64 systems, as I found no reports of any issues with KB4049016.
No ill effects on my machines, either.

 

After reading your post I went and check my authorization.xml, it still had the expired date. I then went and checked for updates manually, and this time, unlike yesterday, I got an error (80244019). I disabled Windows updates in Services, and reenabled it immediately afterward. This allowed me to check for updates successfuly but the expiration date remained the same.

After searching Google for a little while, I found this solution: Install Silverlight. It worked.

I opened IE, downloaded Silverlight, installed it, it put back the option that faded away in this computer a long time ago (Give me updates for Microsoft products and check for new optional Microsoft software when I update Windows) and the authorization xml was updated. I uninstalled Silerlight afterward.

How about that, hopefully this information might help someone.

I've found a major problem with this update.

On one machine if I manually check for updates KB4051963 downloads and looks like it installs, but then Windows Update says it is up to date and KB4051963 does not show in Update History.

If I then restart my machine the update installs properly and eventually I'm back in Windows.

Now the problem happens when I run Disk Cleanup. Next time I restart my machine will not boot and goes in a repair loop that fails. This has happened three times on this machine now. Three times I've restored using MR.

So, those who say not to use CCleaner, CCleaner has NEVER caused my machine not to boot but Disk Cleanup does in this case.

 

Perhaps Disk Cleanup has deleted an important driver which has been stored in a temporary folder?
Unselect "Delete Temporary Files" and let Disk Cleanup run. If it works (no repair loop, etc.) you have found the evildoer (Delete Temporary Files)

I wonder why a driver would be placed in temporary tiles?

Does that mean I will never be able to delete temporary files again? No CCleaner, no PrivaZer and especially no Disk Cleanup? I don't need the space but I like my machine cleaned of unneeded junk.

Reading your second link it looks like the culprit is the Disk Cleanup tool removing more than just temporary files, right? CCleaner shouldn't have that problem but I'm thinking PrivaZer would.

After a recent problem I had with restoring another machine with MR I'd rather not take unnecessary risks on this machine.

Next week we will probably get a newer Cumulative update and since KB4051963 mainly fixes bugs with IE 11 I can do without that.

 

I ll tell you 2 ways you can delete temporary files, that do a better job than CCleaner and is safer than Disk cleanup.

1. Go to Settings>System>Storage, Click C Drive under Local storage. Click Temporary files, Tick Temporary files, Click Remove files.

2. Go to Settings>System>Storage, Click Storage sense (How we free up space), Tick Temporary files, Cleanup now.

Either way works pretty good. I usually do both options, and reboot. After reboot my temporary files are about 2.5 MB. Using this process cleans up completely folders, 1. AppData>Local>Temp and 2. AppData>Local>Microsoft>Windows>INetCache (for this folder to show, you need to untick "Hide protected operating system files" option for folders).

If you run CCleaners, this folders never get wiped. If you run Disk cleanup, some files get deleted but not the majority.

The process via Settings, cleans up those folders completely. After reboot, they ll have about 2.5,MB, with a timestamp after you ran cleanup via Settings. Works good.

Bo,

The problem appears to be Disk Cleanup removing more than just temp files. How could I trust Windows using your method? It could still remove more than just temp files and I'm not into experimenting with this, my main machine.

 

I dont trust Disk cleanup either.

I found deleting temporary files and the windows.old folder via settings working smoothly and easy. I ran Disk cleanup about 3 times the first month and a half I had the laptop, and felt umcorfotable using it. Unsatisfied completely. The first time I wanted to delete files after a Windows update, I ran Disk cleanup, it showed that it clean up about 2 gigs, after reboot..........nothing got cleaned.

Later, Windows on its own doing without me doing anything, clean up those files and then one day all of the sudden the system got back the 2GB.

I ll do some pictures for you. This is what I have now for temporary files. I ll run both options, reboot and I ll come back in about 25 minutes with a second and third picture.

I allready got them. I like you to try iy, Krusty. This are good settings.

Take a look. The folders in the 2nd and 3rd picture, they usually have many files in there. You run CCleaner, most files stay there. You run Disk cleanup, same result. Via Settings, they get clean. Look at the Timestamp of the files you see, they were created a few minutes ago after running cleanup via Settings.

To be on the safe side, i would choose a program which have worked without problems. I think the winner is: "CCleaner has NEVER caused my machine not to boot"
...or Privazer if it is also able to clean files without problems.

Hasn't XP received updates since EOL?

 

My issue with KB40519563 is that it now shows 'Requires a restart to finish installing' even after a restart.

Not going to bother to restore an image seeing it's only IE11 related.

Edit: Restored, and it worked after a couple of attempts. Now build 16299.98.

Edit 2: Still no update offered on second machine, 07 October.

I was wondering the same thing. I assumed that the date was Windows Update specific, rather than Windows 7 specific, due to extended support (being Windows Updates) ends on Oct. 14, 2025 for Windows 10. Seems I was wrong about that.

 

My machine has an Intel Core i5 @ 2.20GHz processor. Should I receive 2017-11 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1709 for amd64-based Systems (KB4051963)??
