Looks about the same as this report usually does. At least everyone is somewhat consistent.

And I thought the whole Nitro thing was supposed to make Avast lighter, but most the tests show it getting heavier instead.

 

Avast Free and AVG are identical, right? Emphasis on "free." Microsoft's security--it can be super with the right settings, but who in general wants to get mired in the procedures? So, the usability score is understandable (what an understatement). I see the false positive rate is still high. Kaspersky is a beautiful thing, as usual.

They always rate ESET's performance bad month after month despite AV-Comparatives showing it's the lightest in their latest tests. I don't trust their tests anymore, it's always the same AVs with the lightest performance according to them which according to my testing doesn't hold true. I felt my system much slower even browsing files in Windows Explorer using Kaspersky, like the icons of the setupfiles wouldn't load all at once as if they were being scanned every time and causing a slowdown.

 

I guess you're not from the U.S.? It's PC Matic. Basically an anti-exec disguised as an AV. Hence the high FP rate.

 

ESET is a mixed bag as far as what it slows down. I've had ESET slow Windows Explorer as well and it probably slows browsing for me more than any other product. That said, aside from those 2 things I find it generally lighter than most other products. I've also noticed that at least for me, the longer I have it installed the slower it gets, but I find the same true with Kaspersky.

 

so what you recommend me then if i want ligh + secure? Norton? I also notice the slowdown in browsing but I guess i forgot about it and think that's the norm probably because of how long I've been using NOD32. I do like how it blocks bad HTTP connections like today I was on some hosting site trying to download the new Windows 10 ISO which contains the Nov updates but ESET blocked the coin hive attacks so I learned not to visit that site again

Really wish Emsisoft was in this but eh.

 

Nitro was about reducing the definitions size by means of offloading complicated generic/learning algorithms to cloud, which pushes updates in near real-time to the product. "Nitro" actually refers to the speed of delivering protection, not the speed of the product in terms of system resources. The added side-effect was a (theoretically) reduced memory footprint, which was "compensated" by the various features/bloat added to the program in recent times.

 

light and secure doesn't come in a package usually, or at least what definition you have about light.
Norton is nowhere near light, ESET is light, but its protection been lacking.
honestly Kaspersky has been improving performance rapidly since last years.

 

My experience with light av's:

Panda free/IS
Bitdefender free
Bullguard IS

My system specs are an i7 3770, 16gb RAM, SSD 840 Evo and Win 10 pro.

 

every time i give bitdefender a shot, it feels like a sloth. no clue how can they have such an unresponsive, buggy interface..

After using Norton for a day, I uninstalled it. It was severely reducing my 1gb internet connect speeds.

 

ditto. It's always been like this for years. Great detection rates spoiled by a horrid interface and buggy app. Seems like the only thing they're interested in is excelling in these tests and adding more bloat to their products like system optimizers and whatnot

Norton slows browsing as well if you let it install the browser add-ons. Nothing wrong with using ESET (which I am not currently but I wouldn't have a problem with doing so) I was just trying to explain the reason why it gives poor performance scores in testing by these sites. The best product is always the one you like that runs well on your PC.

 

It may be worth trying, as I just tested on one machine. But saw a noticeable impact that went away immediately after uninstalling it. I have noticed this with a few AV, and it must have something to do with the way they filter internet traffic or something.

Eset is by default mediocre in these test settings. With tweaks it's
definitely more strong. The same goes for avast.but all av-test-labs procedures are with default settings
