Live links

    A moderator recently edited my post which contained a new link to the video that is the topic of discussion. I received an alert which said,
    Reason: Live link de-linked as per Wilders policy.
    If this is according to the rules I have no problem with abiding by it but I have never seen such a rule that says live links are not allowed, except to flash updates.

    It was only "de-linked" from a moderator. This can also happen with direct download links, links to pdf-files, etc.
    You can embed such links in [CODE] tags or use [PLAIN], then it is not a "live link" anymore.

    Yes that was it, but I still would like to know, which policy of Wilder's Forums the moderator was applying because I don't see any such rule in the forum terms and rules list.

    RockLobster, there are two policies that cover removal of video links:

    2. https://www.wilderssecurity.com/threads/about-the-product-vs-21895-malware-samples-threads.297136/ (2011)

    A few years ago, we adjusted those policies to allow the videos, at the request of members who wished to see technical videos, but we decided to de-link them. The policy verbiage remains as "removal" in case we ever have to reverse that decision. So far, the use of either CODE or PLAIN links by members is welcomed and encouraged by forum staff. As long as that member effort continues, we will not remove appropriate video links. Off Topic videos will always be removed.

    Well, that looks like a bit of policy creep is going on because the first post is specifically about posting product vs product testing videos which I agree with because without proper scientific controls such home testing could unfairly bias one product.
    The other is specifically about malware sample sharing. I still do not see any terms, conditions or rules about posting live links to videos related to general computer related discussion such as the one in question.
    Forums need rules, we all know that, and they need moderators to apply them when necessary, but at the same time they need to be sure they are applying the actual forum rules, not just what they think is the rules.

    Oh, come on RockLobster, take a deep breath, count to ten, and relax.
    There was only a link de-linked. That's all. Just use the PLAIN tag, that's all.

    BTW, in the end, decisions of moderators are not open for discussion.
    The de-linking has been explained to you now.

    I'm not stressed about it at all, I was just suggesting the moderators apply the rules as they were written.
    Why should you take issue with that?
