    hi
i'm thinking to buy an external hard disk , not a portable , and i'm undecied about wd and lacie

they are both 3TB hard disk

in a store i have found for 100€
WESTERN DIGITAL My Book SmartWare 3TB USB 3.0
LACIE Porsche Design P9233 Light Gray 3Tb USB 3.0

they are both great hard disk ,i guess about lacie i'm concerned that they still use cheap maxtor hard disk(once i open a similar model and i found a cheap maxtor) and about WESTERN DIGITAL My Book SmartWare 3TB USB 3.0 they still have their encryption hardware with their drivers and i guess they are no bootable

about bootable , i thinking to use on my windows or imac

about imac , to restore an carbon copy cloner image ,the device have to be bootale

do lacie still use cheap maxtor hard disk?
wd looks more solid , but are they really not botable?
can you give me you opition ?

    thanks

They use Seagate, which owns Maxtor, so you might say yes.

I have several WD and Lacie drives sitting on my shelf. Be glad to give you one, only problem is they are all failed. If you want a recommendation I can give you one, but since it's off topic, you will havee to ask.

Currently I have 6 various models of Transcend ruggedized external USB drives, and they are various ages, and all going strong.

The only hard drive I ever had fail was a Western Digital at only 2 or 3 years old, I've got10+ yr old Seagates and maxtors that still work fine.

    hi Peter
are you talking about model like StoreJet 35T3 ?
because i don't want a portable hard disk , but an external hard disk with a power supply.
because about transcend i have tried lots of portable drives and they are great ,but all of they were portable

    thanks Peter

HI RockLobster ,your drive was an external drive?
    thanks

They all were internal drives but I still use the old Maxtor's and seagates etc from old computers in USB caddies, mostly for creating backups.

Why do you want to buy one with the enclosure? I had a similar experience with Pete... all hdds with power supply that I had wd, lacie, maxtor and seagate eventually died (some after 1-2 years but most in the first 1-6 months).
On the other hand I have about 2 dozens of portable hdd (wd, lacie, toshiba...) and all are working fine... 4-5 of them are 10 years old.

Hi Panagiotis , i prefer drive with power supply just because they don't warm up like the portable hard disk and because i keep lots of time connected
and because i had always seagate in the past , and 2 wd external and 2 lacie , and 1 portable (that died in 1 year)

hi Peter , about is StoreJet 35T3 the only one with external supply ? all the other are portable
    thanks Peter

    Hi RockLobster
may i ask you what usb cable do you use?
just because i have some old seagate barracuda /toshiba even hitachi (all sata) and i got several time issues with usb adaptors
    thanks

The hard drive caddies came with their own USB cables. One end has a non standard connector that plugs into the caddy, the other end has a double USB connector. You can plug each one into a separate USB port for faster access. Or you can just plug one in.

Does alimentator mean it provides power for the hard drive?
If so, the answer is, yes it does.

Those that warm up a lot are those in plastice or rubbered enclosures. If you want it on 24/7 buy one that comes with aluminum enclosure or even better use a docking station.
Have you consider buying an aluminum enclosure and a separate hdd? If you are in Europe take a look at the raidsonic enclosures.

Good to know! I have switched to portable drives because to me they are more handy. I like the ones from WD. I also have a Lacie drive with power supply but it makes weird noises.

You Mantra you worry about heat. I have 3 external USB drives that are powered by power supplies and several portable ruggedized drives that have padded rubber cases as part of the ruggedizing . These are the Transcends. Guess which ones run hotter. Yep, the ones with the external supplies.

Usually I run 3 full surface tests and 1 random read/write test when I buy a new dirve (after some bad experiences that I had). If I hear any weird sound I issue a DOA at the store I bought it.

    Yes.
The last 2-3 years whenever I want a new external hdd I buy an aluminum enclosure and an hsgt travelstar 7k1000 (if/when have a choice I avoid the cinese manufactured hdds; had bad experiences)
7k1000 has decent speed ~133mb/s sequential read.
