Google Chrome now has a built-in anti-virus for Windows

Thoughts on this? I don't care for the idea.

 

That makes two of us. I just hope they provide the option to disable it entirely, otherwise I'll move to Firefox full time.

Same here. Firefox 57 is making me like Firefox again.

I hope turning it off is a reasonable option (multiple people at work using it) as it is bad enough with all of the other services and scheduled tasks they are running. I wonder if turning it off will actually turn it off.

This isn't going to be a full blown AV.

 

google owns virustotal, why switching?
i think its only "cloud" usage.
nevertheless google chrome is blown - i stay with chromium (no updater, no toolbar, no extension, no this or that)

 

And this **** will be installed and activated by default?

Do Google, Microsoft, Apple and all these %$#|% companies think that our data and hardware is their own to scan whenever they like?

Telemetry, scanning, keytyping, microphone and camera monitoring for our own good....
...but hey as Apple says they are commited to protect and safeguard our personal data (data that was "stolen" from us by them) in the first place.

Has the entire tech community gone nuts this last decade?

Yes, it's basically them expanding the current cleanup implementation to also include things that are hostile towards Chrome (search hijacks, extensions, etc).

It is completely a self-interested change to improve the experience for Chrome users, and a good change at that. Anyone not interested will just disable it.

Calling it "anti-virus" was 100% clickbait, it's interesting the amount of people that just read a headline and go on a anti-Chrome crusade. "This fits my narrative it must be true".

 

mozilla and its annoying system extension to "improve" firefox - and chrome raging in our systems with its cleanup. i really hope that chromium is free of this crap!

Sounds like it's probably a good thing for the average users. We know how easily they get hijacked clicking on this and that installing toolbars and other PUA's.

Well using "we" implies that everyone is the average user in the context of what I said, and that's not the case. It's not a big deal to me either way though, whatever floats your boat.

I personally think it's a good idea, but only because it prompts you before taking action. However, I use a third party Chrome based browser (Cent Browser) rather than Chrome itself. So maybe, I won't get it.
