Oops, too late, lol. Some good snippets in the article, @stapp, and was something requested in the Emsi forum a very short time ago. Ask and ye shall receive, right?

I accepted Emsisoft's decision from the get-go. Really have no choice.

 

Have to write few words here. Im paid customer for Emsisoft for 8 years and brought to this family users most of my friends. I wrote many posts about Emsisoft here, as my long term favorite security solution. Im personaly not happy from this decition remove own firewall from Emsisoft. If I see same thing in Kaspersky, Bitdefender, Avast, ESET...can say, maybe, but still one of first defence is always firewall. What to say here, Im going support Emsisoft as before, but will be not same, simply they removed something, what I personaly liked most, one of best firewalls on market. Sad to say that, but Emsisoft in my personal opinion did wrong turn to customers. If we like to keep firewall, give as this option, same as competition is do.

I never used the firewall so i dont really mind the change.
However, i still miss Online Armor.

 

All geeks like us missed it, all Average Joes were relieved it disappeared (so they didn't have to call the support team anymore)

 

The firewall Online Armor Emsisoft ripped apart, and spit out in less then 5 years.

 

I was a big fan of OA, was disappointed as well when abandoned, then knew why, understood the reason, and i can say today it was the right decision; only geeks uses HIPS, Average Joe can't even handle them...

HIPS are dead niche, look how many are left:

- Comodo: HIPS isn't even the main strength, it is its sandbox now.
- Spyshelter
- ESET
- Kaspersky made it almost like a BB...

Not saying the sales wasn't even capable to finance OA's development, any lucid CEO will do the same.

Anyway, there is no need to debate about it anymore, it will not bring it back...

 

HIPS are dead, the users that can make correct decisions while using this kind of software dont need it in first place, thats why automatic behavior blocker is the future (and virtualization/sandbox ofcourse).

I really like the decisions that Emsisoft made in its software architecture; they created a powerful antimalware that anyone can use it.

The last month has put me through the ringer trying to find a good firewall.
Tested almost every stand-alone wall, (7x64) very depressing.

 

@Circuit Since OA, i also looked for a replacement, more the FW part than the HIPS in fact. there my journey :

- Comodo FW: Closest to OA, but an unresolved bug really annoys me (disappearing rules), i can't use Comodo as i wish because of it...depressing, i love Comodo stuff in general.
- Zone Alarm, Outpost, PrivateFW, etc...: Decent stuff but nothing really attracted me.
- ESET IS: Very nice FW with lot of cool features like IDS/IPS, but must buy the suite to have it...
- Spyshelter FW: Good but too "simple" to me. didn't last long.
- Symantec Endpoint Protection: Best replacement i ever found, the FW is awesome, but like ESET paying for a suite just for a FW is not what i planned to use my money for.
- Various WinFW GUI: Binisoft WFC, best one to me but just a GUI...

So Finally i decided to learn Windows Firewall w/ Advanced settings, was a bit inconvenient at the beginning but now i "tamed" it and happy with it, no additional drivers, no slowdowns, no bloat.
I can now create rules on the fly in less than a minute. I use WinFW like an SRP, block all connections unless i personally allowed the rule.

Of course, i can understand that WinFW won't be enough for some people who needs an alert/prompt to feel safe. All is matter of taste after all.

Does EAM import these to hosts file or handle them separately?

The reason I ask is because I use Unchecky which also uses hosts file and was wondering if it's entries will be overwritten?

Comodo= no way.
Zone alarm= no way to block ports for one program, as far as I know, not enough info (have to put full trust in ZA, or add another program to see whats going on) . Don't like their slippery ad in the paid for version. Nice price but you get what you paid for as always.
OP=dead, same with PrivateFW.
Eset= to expensive.
Spyshelter= will take your word.
Symantec= to many conflicts with other security programs, and slowed the whole system.
Bingsoft= A keeper. Getting to really like.

As far as EAM, I will stay for now don't like how it is based on digital signatures.
Kind of like the mob, pay or your out. Hurts the honest little guy (WFC5).

Call me a geek if you like, but I can't live without a HIPS. I want full control over my box. It doesn't make much sense to me to say that people capable of making the right decisions don't need one anyway. How can you know exactly what's going on to make those decisions without one? Especially in Win7 at first... I get a ton of popups in Paranoid Mode before it settles down. And a bunch of stuff that doesn't need certain access. Without a HIPS those things are just taking privileges they don't need, and furthermore are compromising you.

Also I still use v5.10. I have no problem with rules vanishing, and no reason to upgrade, unless the nature of packet filtering or app control has changed over time. No, the updates are just for compatibility problems (I don't have) and taking a nice, clean, user friendly GUI and making it convoluted. And the HIPS is much better than the Sandbox. But that's moot. I'm a Sandboxie man and whatever app had a sandbox with it would be disabled in favor of Sandboxie. As for Emsisoft, I like the AV only, and I hope they remove as much as possible other than the resident file scanning. That's all an AV should be IMO. Other software can do a better/dedicated job of doing the other things. My favorite AV ever remains those old free versions of Avira, back when all it did was resident file scanning. And you used to be able to overcome the weaknesses vs. the paid version by using the scheduler to get auto updates whenever you wanted them, and tweak the registry to get rid of the splash screen. Event the web guard added to the paid version was a waste of resources. I wish more AV vendors would follow suit and use those old Avira Free versions as a blueprint. I'd totally pay for it, as contradictory as that sounds.
