Paying for antivirus software is mostly BS

Would you please send me any extra money that you have? I would really appreciate as I don't think PCH is going to send me any - lol.

 

Not really, but I don't think that the average home user needs to pay for an AV.

 

Yeah, I'm filthy rich myself.

I still pay for my software.

 

I've never been infected while using either Avast or Window Defender / MSE, but then I can't remember when or if I ever got infected using Norton either.

 

It seems that none of us have ever been infected at all.
I really wonder why.

 

I guess we are careful about what we click on, where we go and what we download.

... Or we are infected with stealthly malware we don't know about.

 

I think you are right Krusty.
I don't go wandering off off into uncharted territory and I suspect most people are the same.

 

If you are not click happy and keep Windows and vulnerable software updated it is extremely hard to get infected.

I simply don't understand. Avast free here on 4 systems at home. Not a single issue. Why you would pay for AV software is beyond me. But hey, if you feel the need...go hard.

 

Each to their own, if you stray from the yellow brick 'internet road' then your armour will need to be tad stronger than if you stay on it.

 

Windows Defender may not be the apex security solution but from my admittedly limited experience, it is by far the most compatible AV I've used on my Win10 machines. No toolbars, pop-ups, registration, or other annoyances either, but as has been said already, each to their own.

 

i think that most users here are tech savvy and if the same question was asked of most n00bs they would choose the free option

 

To me, paying for good product giving you what you need is totally fine, however having a BS product for free isn't. Life isn't so complicated.

 

So guest, what do you call a BS product?

Indeed, anyway everybody is free to have an opinion, i do, they do.
Those i use in my setup are paid, the only one free that i ever used for long time was Comodo IS/FW.

 

So you're saying you never tried any other free AV's so you really can't comment on their effectiveness.

When you have enough experience with softwares you can see a product reliability in less than 2-3 weeks of use, sometimes even in less than a day.
Please don't twist my words, i said "used for long time" not "tested".

I tested many, disliked many (for various reasons at the time i tested them), liked many others (but don't feel the needs to use them), and finally i decided which ones were best for me, and i still use them.

I will not mention those i disliked but if you want i can give you a list of those i liked.
