I'm always amazed at user's thoughts on security. Some think CC should be dropped - others don't. Same thing happened with Kaspersky Anti-Virus recently. It seems there is no perfect decision in these matters. Just your own judgment whether it is good or bad for you, I guess.

I am dropping CC until and unless they can earn my trust again. This thing was digitally signed. No excuses are good enough for me short term. It had to be infected before it was signed or the signature would have been invalidated. An AV company should know better than to release a product it bought without a decent amount of code review first. I'm not surprised when others drop it. I am a little surprised with the trust given by those who are not, at least in the short term, but to each his own.

The Kaspersky situation is nothing but a judgement call at this point. There is no evidence of any wrong doing, but depending on how accountable you are for any issues it may cause if you recommend it, I could see dropping it. I will not until I see evidence. If any comes out, I will be their harshest critic. Until then it is propaganda.

To the question asked in the thread, I've had good luck with utilities by Eusing and Auslogics. That said I am personally going to just stick with the Windows Disk Cleanup Utility for the short term.

I narrowed it on the brief statement in the topic but I fully second @xxJackxx's explanation. Piriform failed seriously and I don't have justification for them the more they're controlled by an AV company.

Wahey, at least some people are experiencing some (short term) common sense. Hope is not lost for the average Wilders member.

Do people actually read what is posted and analyze the impact. I checked my machines, removed 533, and for now put verson 419 back on. Still don't see any reason to go overboard

No, since some people continue to trust pointless software and fall back to old versions as if that's somehow an improvement on the situation. Odd people.

In this case I meant the opposite. People aren't reading what has been posted leads me to think that to me the risk was minor. Since I have found ccleaner a useful tool for cleaning out junk files I continue to use it, based on a risk assessment based on what I've read.

Partially agree: I find disturbing that - I really don't believe, but... - may be that in my system also after updating CCleaner, checked in different mode the system, checked the keys in the registry... the backdoor can be remained, hidden.

The "impact" was massive FUD, especially when there was realization of the enormous potential.

I thought this thread was dedicated to those who, for various reasons, have had it with Piriform and were looking for alternatives. Betrayal of trust, last straw due to issues with others of its products, etc. Informative and helpful thread. Back to Wise Disk Cleaner, takes the least toll. :thumb:

Plus, this is a "teachable moment" for other software vendors, all of them, right?

Thanks. It really resembles ccleaner. Almost same features. Will give it a try.

I found it worked well in cleaning Google Chrome, but it failed in cleaning Microsoft Edge.
So i'm leaning to going back to CCleaner.

Does anyone know how the installed version numbers correlate to the portable? Mine is portable 5.05.5176 but it looks like it's 2015 when I downloaded it.

When these sorts of breaches surface one does wonder about the "its-much-worse-than-we-first-thought" scenario. Who's to say how far back this goes.

According to CCleaner history v5.05.5176 was released on 04/23/2015. Same as portable version AFAIK.
I think the slim versions are released about a week later.

Good tip! I'm so satisfied that I ditched off Wise Disk & Registry cleaners. I would say it is CCleaner in a different suit.

I'm trying to install Wise Disk Cleaner on another machine and both Microsoft browsers show this:

    wise virus snip.PNG

Is anyone else seeing this lately? The URL on the Edge snip looks funny--memory optimizer? Never downloaded so can't submit anything to VirusTotal unless I disable SmartScreen, and not doing that on here.

Edit: Yeah, forget it, Wise Cleaner is off the other one, not taking chances. The link to Privacy Eraser was conveniently here so, here it is! :) Snazzy interface, right? This IS the right interface, right? lol.

Windows 10? -> Windows Defender with Adware search - well done :D
The Adware is inside, you know?

Any Wise cleaning program is crap, i dropped them completly like glary and similar.
so heavy destructive in my system when i tested it - if i had let it work i instantly could have system recovered, or from scratch if no backup.
    those programs are really stupid.

I gave up CCleaner ages ago for BleachBit . It just works when I need it.

Understandable that you so vehemently oppose these optimizers @Brummelchen, seeing what you said about destructiveness. This hasn't been an easy time all around since this CC scare arose, for sure.

When Wise was first installed a couple weeks prior, machine had EAM and there were no alerts or warnings, no problems d/l or installation. Now there is, and in this CCleaner/backdoor context, I really didn't know what to make of it, the alert said "virus" which is generic. This 2nd machine currently runs Win10 Pro w/Defender with ATP and PUA det. enabled. Agreed, well done Windows Defender here.

Wise is offa here, including reg. Don't recall if anti-exe had alerted, the logs are deleted, darn it.
