I'm looking for a replacement to Freemake Video Downloader. It would be better if free, open source and with an active community backing it.

    Any recommendations on this?

    Thanks and best regards,

freemake is adware overall, neither nor recommended. and you wont find much OS software for that.

which video sites it should support? there are so many. i dont expect a free build to support all sites - even close as OS.

i would use a browser extension to grab videos right there, where i am watching them.

a very good and supported program is "Applian Replay Media Catcher" but that is not free.

I like 4K Video Downloader, it's freeware, according to OpenMedia LLC the code is open source, there's no adware in the installer, but you can get some recommendation/ad in the user interface. I don't know of a community backing this software.

It should support at least YouTube and Dailymotion, and this latest one is specially tricky on downloading a full channel/playlist.

Both suggestions are quite interesting and I surely will try them. If you guys would like to add others to the list, please.

I found with 4K downloader (portable) it phoned home on each launch. Smartsniff showed 2 ip addresses. I blocked them in my firewall.

I must say that this one surprised me. It just lacks a true, complete user interface, as the existing is too simple.

Is anyone else aware of this? Do developers say something about it?

I haven't investigated, but I guess it is because of the mechanism that shows you a recommendation/ad in the user interface.
I guess if you block those connections, the recommendation/ad in the user interface is not shown. Is that correct?

Yes I believe so, same thing happens with YTD Video Downloader, it's not a big deal. If you don't fully trust these tools, it's best to block them from accessing important data with a file/folder protection tool.
