    Good ... I presume you mean within Options in Firefox 57 (not Ghacks user.js ...?), though force_disable is working fine for now, in FF 55.

    Of the various similar(?) link cleaner type extensions, is there one you would particularly recommend?

    One review mentions it interferes with sign in to Twitter (edit: and thepetitionsite.com), which I can confirm. Otherwise, looks neat - thanks.

    Edit: Also interferes with access to Google Photos.

    This option can be found under Preferences > Privacy & Security > Permissions.

    There are 2 link cleaner extensions in the collection that will clean up tracking parameters: Link Cleaner and Neat URLs. Other ones are able to fix redirects.
    • Neat URLs provides the ability to add custom tracking parameters to the extension. The dev is going to be adding some more himself, including an ability for wildcards.
    • Link Cleaner cleans Google's utm_* and Amazon's ref=* only, has no ability to add custom tracking parameters, but as an added bonus it fixes the redirects on reddit/facebook/steam. If you use these services it may be useful to you.
    • Google search link fixer cleans the URLs on the Google search results page. It's useful only if you use Google search and don't want Google to know which links you are clicking. A nice addition to this is Searchonymous2, which prevents Google's tracking cookies from being set.
    • Skip Redirect uses a more global pattern to get you to the page you want to visit directly.
    These extensions modify the URL on the fly by using the onBeforeRequest listener and don't do content injection, so they're not going to hurt your browser's performance and come with a small footprint. You could enable them all or simply use the one's you need. I personally only use Neat URLs and Skip Redirect.

    Hopefully the dev fixes it. The extension seems promising - looking at it's code it does a lot of neat things. I do wish it had some on/off UI toggles for it's various spoofing methods, this would make it easier to pin-point a problematic spoofing method.

    Thank you for creating this highly informative thread, @summerheat. I'll have to set aside some time this week to play around some more :)

    I think guest meant this. It's available in FF57 Nightly, indeed.

    I will need to remember this when FF 57 lands on my system, and use that setting, rather than my current native force_disable (although maybe they are doing the same).

    From your link: It is good to know that in FF 57 'you may check which third-party accessibility tools are accessing the browser, and base the decision on whether to block access or not on that.'

    'We're detecting a long list of obscure and some not so obscure 3rd party Windows applications that use accessibility to snoop on user activity.'

    I don't need that much customization. I need to have control over which buttons are visible on the main toolbar, and also an option to put the tabs on bottom, plus the bookmarks manager should be tab-based like in Vivaldi. This combined with a faster engine would make FF almost perfect.

    This has always been possible and still is. Just right-click the toolbar and modify it to your liking with drag and drop. See, e.g., the picture above in @bo_elam's post.
    There are legacy add-ons which offer that. I don't know if there is an API to make this possible for webextensions. Please search through the Tabs category of the existing webextensions.
    Perhaps you can find something similar in the Bookmarks category.
    Believe me - FF57 is considerably faster.

    its forbidden for webextensions to screw on firefox. use userchrome instead, go mozillazine - it has been resolved.

    Firefox Nightly fully updated.

    I opened about : performance and saw some pages had
    What does "very often" refer to? Does it refer purely to data collected from my system, or is it based on some database of usage by other Nightly users as well?

    I'm just going to continue with FF at least until November and see if the wrinkles are worked out in the configuration I have. Will make my decision at that time and now worry about it in the interim. I can always fall back on Edge, Chrome, Opera or Vivaldi. Just not going to panic......yet! lol.

    hey vasa1 - you talk about a nightly which changes every day, **** happens. but i think you should not turn ths thread into a personal suppor thread - go mozillazine instead please. this appears to be informational.

    There is now a new constant icon in the title/tab bar if your accessibility features are enabled. Helpful to indicate to people that your e10s may have been disabled.
    Also the fonts are changed in about:config and about:addons options.
    I also like the new color combination of the developer tools.
    Good additions.:thumb:

    Well, I've noticed that for several sites I got the message "may currently be slowing down Nightly." but some seconds later "currently performs well." I guess that depends if the resources on that site are loaded and cached. I haven't seen the "very often" yet but will monitor it.

    For some of you it might be intersting to know that FF57 got 2 new settings concerning bookmarks. If you set

    browser.tabs.loadBookmarksInTabs = true

    clicking a bookmark causes it to open in a new tab which also gets the focus. If you additionally set

    browser.tabs.loadBookmarksInBackground = true

    bookmarks are also opened in new tabs which do not get the focus, though. Hence, you can configure it to your liking.
