Depends what kind of use you expect from a firewall, if you need to detail for each component which ports should be used or not then indeed ZAfree is not for you. For all the other normal scenarios (packet filtering and inbound/outbound control of the system) you don't need to open or close ports as ZA will do it for you.

Please explain WHY it takes sooooo long to scan? I did a reinstall of Windows 10 with only 4 third party apps and a full scan took over 2 hours ! This is simply unacceptable if it is how the AV works. I scanned twice thinking the first would take longer. Nope.
    Thanks in advance

    Hi Everyone

Does ZoneAlarm Free nag you to upgrade? If so how frequent is the "nagging"

    Thanks

    Terry

I love it when people want to know about the nagging before they install a free app..

I don't pay much attention to upgrade popups. ZA free seems to nag after every reboot.

It means nagging really works. :)

The outbound protection and having several of the vulnerable ports blocked. I am still undecided as to whether I need it.

You can use a front-end for windows firewall: tinywall and binisoft WFC are two good examples

I hope this is the right place for this...
I have a relative 3000 miles away who is very smart but not computer literate.
I am going to mail her the install part of Zone Alarm FREE on a CD since she is not even sure of how to download and won't ask for help back there.

Just one question about the antivirus section of this program-- will she have to update every day or will it do that automatically?
    Thanks

ZA will update everyday or next boot if the system is off during the update time.
Installer: There is no offline installer. The person will need to run the web installer with an active internet connection to allow the download of ZA and its installation.
Other security tools (other than WD) must be removed before proceeding to install ZA. Run the ZA installer with windows firewall turned ON (default on win7 and win10).

Thank you very much. That is all the information I need.
I did put the file necessary to start the install download on a CD and will put it in today's mail.
    I really appreciate your help.
