Any reason to use ESET for malware protection?

    Referring to the link here

    https://www.mrg-effitas.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/08/MRG-Effitas-360-Assessment_2017_Q2_wm.pdf

    Some pros include

    1) Its many features in the network protection for its Internet Security Suite
    2) Light on memory so good for those having low RAM on their PC
    3) Best in protection against deceptors

Other than that it can be seen that ESET is a middle performer. So anyone still using it for your real-time protection against malware? Like to hear some feedback.

    Thanks

I don't use it, because some items need to be manually excluded. But, based on testing it earlier in the year, v10 of ESET products are among the lightest antiviruses there are, and in my experience at least, are much lighter than even the old v2 products.

If it was easier to exclude things I want to keep, I would probably be using ESET products instead of Panda.

Could you please elaborate more on this? What was detected that you would need to exclude? I assume it was some potentially unwanted application; in such case in order to exclude it from detection completely, just unfold advanced options in the yellow alert window, tick "Exclude from detection" and select "No action".

Yes, it was some PUPs. I believe that I was not able to exclude some PUPs, due to them being detected as adware or perhaps even malware. The apps in question were definitely not malicious, but could not excluded when they were detected. I could have manually added exclusions, but I did not want to have to do that.

It's a shame, as it was extremely light on my laptop, whereas v9 and previous releases caused very noticeable slowdowns. I also really like the UI.

I don't use it ATM, but could use it with no problems. I especially like it's lightness, low FP rate, PUA detection and overall trouble-free performance.

ESET has the best balance of performance, usability, detection and false positive rate; thats why I can recommend and personally use it without second thought.

The best would be to know the exact detection name so that I could advise further. If it was detected as malware, only analysts could confirm that the detection is correct. As a user, it's not a good practice to make conclusions yourself that a particular file is not malicious if you haven't analyzed it. Yet it's possible to exclude files or whole folders from detection although we don't recommend using exclusions at all as each creates a potential security hole.
I'd suggest installing a trial version of ESET and contacting us in our official forum at https://forum.eset.com in case you encounter a problem with detection or exclusions.

    Hi

Any reason why ESET has fallen into the middle class performer as compared to previous years i.e not in the top 3? Is it that its detection engine is no longer capable of handling modern day malware? This can be seen from other lab tests as well

ESET is a great choice for companies and that is about it, I would never consider it as a personal AV, even though it is from my country.

Would you mind explaining why you would never consider using it on your personal computer?

Couldn't agree more! Tests are just Tests and a very, very small sample size compared to all the thousands upon thousands of new malware everyday.

Better than tests are actually malware cleaning forums to see, what AV people with an infected computers use and tried to use to clean and failed. Malwarebytes is the biggest fail of the year.

I love it; Smart Security that is. If you have a bit of technical knowledge, you can turn it into a "malware killing app." If you fully evaluate all its features, it by far gives the most value per cost. It does have a "few warts" as all security apps do.

Been a user since version 2. Mostly used the AV, recently switched to Smart Security and now Internet Security for a little more protection. I like the very low FPs, easy to use interface, and good support. Never been infected. No reason to switch to another vendor.

Most AV products= snake oil. Good if you want to throw your money away.
AppGuard, SBIE all that is needed. Of course Macrium as a back-up.
I know I'll get slammed for saying this, who cares.

If you visit Kaspesky, BitDefeder, Norton, Avast etc websites you can also see the explanations of their technologies

If an AV cannot even perform with outstanding performance with small sample size then how to convince people that it can perform outstandingly in the wild?

So you are saying the test labs are not testing ESET products correctly?

    @NiteRanger
Eset received level 2 certification. Only Kaspersky received level 1 certification.
Which part of the test did Eset perform unsatisfactorily?

Though I can't agree that "Most AV products= snake oil", my main security programs are the same as yours, Sandboxie, AppGuard and Macrium Reflect, so this post will have to be slam-free.
