nice, simplify and extend some of my own settings, need investigation here which of those. i would set some of them to the user.js because firefox will reset some of them in time (common updates)

As much as I hate to say it, I think that my once fave browser is heading to its death bed.
I have been with it for a long time, but come Firefox 57, I think the best thing I can say for it is RIP.

Actually, I have already moved on to Vivaldi pre-empting its death.

No, I am not a hater of Firefox. I lived and breathed Firebird/Firefox for many, many years. But, I am a realist.

I have always been with Firefox. I also fear they are heading over a cliff.

Will give FF57 a shot, but will go elsewhere (Vivaldi?) if customisation options are too limiting.

No offense - but I don't understand this post at all. There have been dramatic improvements for FF in the past releases - performance-wise, stability-wise (e10s) and security-wise (sandboxing). I've been testing FF57 Nightly for a while and it runs absolutely beautifully and fast. FF57 will certainly be the best release ever - and will still be much more configurable than any other browser (and actually even more so in the future as, e.g., all Tor browser patches will be available in FF). And important further improvements will land from the Servo project.

That said it's clear that due to these massive changes not everybody can be pleased. But while I had switched to Chromium before all those improvements had come to to FF, I have zero reasons to do this now. The advantages of all those changes definitey overweigh the disadvantages.

I've said it often in other threads: If you have problems with FF you should create a new clean profile (by executing firefox -p) as chances are that manual adjustments and changes in about:config done by legacy add-ons over many years still cause problems today as those changes are often no longer used and cause compatibility problems. Unfortunately, only few people seem to bother.

Thanks for your insight, and optimism.

I have a number of profiles in Profile Manager, but will certainly start 'fresh' when 57 arrives. I have too many add-ons anyway in my primary profile.

Just hope that the fuctionality that one takes for granted with e.g. TMP, FaviconizeTab etc. in my case, returns to FF through WE's, even if it is not there initially.

Anyway, I am aware of the changes and will go with the flow; will not go to ESR to delay it.

I understand. I just mention this point as many people are complaining about Firefox being slow, unstable ... whatever. Creating a new profile often solves these problems. Note that in the future incompatibilities should no longer occur as webextensions won't have unlimited write permission for about:config anymore. This has been a big issue for legacy add-ons. This is one important rationale for the move to webextensions: the stability of FF will be much better (not to mention higher security).

I'm glad to hear that the FF57 nightly is running so well. Although I will miss some of the legacy extensions I am looking forward to the improvements that are coming.

Most of my extensions are tagged a 'Legacy' and I would sure miss them so I'll be looking at ESR branch.

I am not moving from Firefox. I ran Firefox 57, with the square tabs and look it comes with, it looked pretty much as I use Firefox now, except the tabs on top which I don't like. But I think Firefox is going to be just fine. Switching to Firefox look a likes that are not following Firefox move to WebExtensions is not gonna cut it. IMO, most of this browsers will eventually die and soon after the move, legacy addons would begin to disappear.

One example, I heard Cyberfox is discontinued. My point was if they dont move to WebExtensions they ll die.

As I understand it, Palemoon is gonna have two versions. One as is now, and the other one will use WebExtensions.

If you have upgraded to FF 55+, hopefully you have a pre-upgrade profile backup, because the upgrade makes changes that are not backwards-compatible.

As far as I understand it, ESR will give you an extra 7 months or so, till you face the same decision. During that time though hopefully more add-ons will become WebExtension-compatible.

Well, I copied my FF profile into Cyberfox long before FF 55 but I did not know about that. Thanks for the heads up, Paul. If I need to start from fresh, so be it.
I guess if the dev's haven't updated by then, well...

Yes, here's the relevant thread in the Cyberfox forum. The developer writes:

Regarding Palemoon: Its rendering engine Goanna is based on Gecko. Now, if you look how many contributors are named on their github site you'll see that not more than a handful of people are making significant commits. I seriously doubt that such a small development team will be able to maintain such a huge code base and handle the inevitable security issues in the long run when their own code and the Firefox code will diverge more and more. Besides, there will be less and less legacy add-ons as most developers will certainly prefer webextensions which will work on Firefox and Chromium-based browsers. I wish them good luck but I can't really imagine that they will succeed.

EDIT: I mentioned the huge code base - this is confirmed here where Moonchild writes that the code base consists of 15 million code lines. This confirms what I said above: You need more than a handful of people but dozens or even hundreds of full-time developers for its maintanance.

stupid mozilla - just "why"? Idiots!
almost all extensions are somehow broken.
people using now v57 should consider this major change and drop old behavior and convenience - forget it - totally - start from scratch. it makes no sense.

at least nightlies or betas are not supposed for the masses - sigh
