I have no issues with updates in Windows 7 and 10. Personally, I would never disable Windows Update.

Thanks Bo, but even the ethernet connection toggle is grayed out, I believe the computer somewhat knows it is not a metered connection and therefore does not have this option available...

Roger, I had lots of problems with Vista, I don't update it anymore. With Win 10 I had no problems so far, I am quite open minded towards having automatic updates, but I believe we should have the possibility to block them if necessary. The average Joe couldn't care less one way or the other, so why not give us this option?

That doesn't sound right or look right.

This Network Window looks different in my laptop. The Setting on top is for Network Discovery, it doesn't show in yours.

Edit: I just thought something. I am using an Administrator account, perhaps you are using a user account and that's why Metered is grayed out for you. I am taking a guess.

Bo amazing, we had the same conclusion albeit you were faster than me. I've just switched to my second Win 10 machine on admin mode and voila' the toggle is active... I usually use these computers on SUA and therefore that option was solely available in an admin account... Well what can I say, Wilders is great because of these positive interactions. I will still go ahead with the updates, but if something goes south I will use the metered connection to stop the updates until they are fixed.
Thanks a lot, it's good to know what we can do with our machines...

I have wondered too why this setting cannot be changed, but now i know why :)

It won't completely stop to download updates, "priority updates" (critical security patches, ...) will still be downloaded after setting the connection to "Metered".

I have a laptop with Vista installed, on which Windows Update works. But, I have noticed that when I've done clean installs of Vista recently, Windows Update does get stuck on checking for updates, and installing the recommended updates to speed up the check has not increased the speed. However, I know that if if left Windows Update running, it would eventually find updates - no doubt after many hours. It's been a month or two since I've done an install of Vista, so perhaps the situation has improved, although I doubt it.

My post was based on the fact that I've recently installed updates on both Windows 10 and 7 computers and they didn't give me any problems. I agree with you that having the ability to block them, would make sense. Personally, I prefer to every install all new updates when they become available, rather than picking and choosing what to install, or waiting for feedback to see if the latest updates are causing any issues. My experience over many years, is that Windows Update rarely causes problems. But, I do realise that this is not the case for everyone.

It is also my experience and I'm willing to risk it as I know if bugs are detected they are quickly fixed. Now what's the point to take an image before updating if upon restoring the OS the automatic updates would reset the OS to an undesirable state... It hasn't happened yet but what if? You know for me it is about having a solution to any contingency, and knowing that setting the connection to metering will stop most updates is another remedy to possible problems. If in a few hours an update is available I will certainly go ahead with it as soon as possible.

I'm not using anymore my Vista computer so it doesn't really matter whether it updates or not, I have restored an image of about 2 years ago and it works perfectly, but I'm afraid I'm totally addicted to the state of the art in computer technology and therefore old OSs are kind of stale and obsolete. I want to keep it as an emergency machine or eventually install a Linux distro...

15063. has been out for ever. Is anyone in this thread using insider builds? I have had nothing but problems with new versions failing to install and rolling back to pervious version automatically. I am currently stuck at version 16232 1706 and I think the latest version is 16251 1706.
I have had to turn off updates because it would just keep trying.

I am glad we figured it out. By the way, I left Metered on, and WU did not check for updates of any kind when I turned the computer on this morning. I ll leave the setting like that for a few days and then turn it off. Let us know when you update and how it went. When I got this laptop last month, one of the first things I wanted to check was Metered, to see how closely using the setting comes to disabling Windows updates in W7 and XP. Like I said earlier, in my test, the setting worked out flawlessly, it didn't check for updates for anything.

I ll add something that I didn't write earlier, with the setting on, WU didn't even check for updates for the Store. Now I disable Store and apps automatic updates but it was nice to see the setting eliminating those updates as well. Another thing, in Windows 10, I notice Windows module installer doing a lot of things in the background, sometimes it removes packages and install others, if it wasn't because I go often to Events log, I wouldn't know about this changes that program does. The setting keeps Windows module installer pretty quiet.

Turning the setting on for a few days right before patch Tuesday its likely to become part of my routine. Thats what I had planned on doing, and what my instincts tell me is the wise thing to do.

On windows 10 -1607 I have in the list to download KB4035631. I checked Microsoft Catalog and there is no information about it. Does anyone know what it's about?

Seems to be a critical update, and it can be found on the Windows Update Catalog:

    mood, Thank you :)
I just stumbled on this information as well. I suppose I should just sit on the notification and delay downloading the other updates, such as KB4034658 and flash.

Windows 10 Pro: Adobe flash player update, cumulative kb 4034674 and Malicious Software Removal Tool all installed great!--but it only took one reboot here to finish installing and another to load back desktop. I have winver of 15063.540 for Creators now. :)

This Aug update for Win 10 1607 wiped all my update history! Thought this was only supposed to happen when a major release upgrade occurred?

According to the link you posted (http://borncity.com/win/2017/08/08/windows-10-critical-updates-kb4035631-and-kb4035632/)
KB4035631 is a patch to the listed previous 3 patches for the servicing stack which have to do with the update process. I have those three patches, perhaps that's the reason it's in my notification to download.
The last one with a smilie in quote is 4013418.

Update history is wiped clean in mine. Windows still shows everything up to date.
