Huh? It means a lot of us here aren't 'real people'... https://nakedsecurity.sophos.com/2017/08/02/uk-home-secretary-real-people-dont-want-unbreakable-encryption
Guess I'm not a real boy either.... That the whole market for end-to-end encryption has been fuelled (literally doused with HE), by unprincipled, unconstitutional and ineffective mass surveillance seems to escape the politicians. It's way too late to put that genie back (the trust is lost), but people would not be so keen on using encryption - however seamless - if they had not engaged with mass surveillance so disgracefully.
Sounds a bit like our current Prime Minister (Turnbull): "Australians can't use high-speed internet!" He means Aussies have no need for 100Mb/s+++. 12 or 25 is plenty! So Aussies have no use for Fiber to the Premises, we can make do with copper for the foreseeable.
Politicians say things like this to try to define what the sheeple will think. It is a brainwashing / indoctrination technique. When the people hear this repeatedly from sources of authority, all those who do not ever think about encryption will be the first to convert. Then those who know a little about but were undecided. They will believe they formed their own opinion but when you argue with them you will notice how they regurgitate the same phrases you heard these politicians using and they will not even realise they are doing it. If you continue giving them evidence that proves what they believe is without foundation you will see a moment of confusion on their face as their brain is wrestling with what it had since been programmed by the media to define as fact and now cannot cope with this conflict of information. Some will just lock up entirely and refuse to continue the discourse. I have seen this more and more in people over the last 20 years it is scary.
Probably none, I think his use of the phrase "real people" is a precursor to the system they will try to implement which will allow full encryption to be used by government agencies and corporations because they are not real people. Everyone else won't be allowed to.
So "real people" = "sheeple", right? And yes @deBoetie, authoritarian governments brought this on. Say what you will about the NSA, but some staff did argue publicly that mass surveillance would drive widespread crypto adoption. Which would increase the noise for targeted operations.
When you see something irrational and ineffective happening, you need to follow the money, and realise the perverse incentives of local optimisation (where social good is not factored into the rewards of those involved). So in this case, adopting a bad strategy was highly attractive to both politicians and IC because there's a CYA element plus a humongous empire building opportunity for managers and suppliers - think Gen. Alexander's Starship. I do not believe the meme that politicians are ignorant or unaware of reality when it comes to encryption. On the contrary, many UK politicians (including Amber Rudd, schooled at Cheltenham Ladies College) have been through prestigious universities where appreciation of Machiavelli has been a self-confessed boast. I also think they are drip-feeding the anti-encryption messages across jurisdictions (such as Australia) as a 5+-eye IC strategy.
I agree, politicians can't be that ignorant. They wouldn't be successful as politicians if they were. Even if they don't have knowledge about technical matter they do get feedback from those that know this stuff. So there is definitely hidden agenda behind this push to break encryption.
That's fundamentally the position that China is taking. And that some Middle Eastern countries have already taken. Makes one think, doesn't it?
Eh? "Real" people? I have a message for that secretary.
