Untill either MS or Virtual Box fixes the last update malfunction, I will stay with 226

 

My new W10 came with version 1607. I didnt want to wait for Creators update to come through Windows update. The waiting for MS had me a little restless. If we were able to control when to update as before W10, I would have waited for a while before updating but I wanted to get this updating over with. So, a little while ago I used The Update Assistant and updated to Creators. The system feels stable, as 1607. I took the assistant from the link below, I feel relief.

Paul, to be perfectly honest, the system feels very good. The updating process using the assistant was smooth and easy.

I'm running at an 8 year old PC on Windows 10 build 1607 without issues. Of course, there is no guarantee about it supporting future Windows 10 builds.

 

I'm running it on some 11 year laptops and it works very well.

 

They're finally removing Syskey which is what the fake tech support scammers use to lock people out of their systems

 

Bo, it's good to see you are happy with the upgrade. I have always been positive about Win 10 and major upgrades on 2 machines Asus and Samsung, although on the Samsung I had to do a clean install as the upgrade never worked properly. IMO, Win 10 CU feels solid and very fast...

 

I like to thank you via this post as well as Mr X, bjm and Peter2150 for helping me (via PMs) before and after buying the W10 PC with doubts and questions I had about the computer I purchased and W10. You personally encouraged me to do the upgrade from 1607 to 1703 using the W10 Update assistant. And I am glad I did it, it worked out flawlessly. Like I told you, when it was over, the PC felt like a baby chicken coming out of the shell.

I bought the laptop 2 weeks ago, it came with 1607 and last Monday I upgraded to 1703, all has been fine, no slowdown, freezes, nothing. No slow cold starts or slow reboots. I read a lot about upgrading to 1703. I think with W10, to better the chances for successful upgrades its better to use few security programs, the less you modify the system, the better. I think staying away from using programs to change settings that you can change yourself is a good idea. I made the PC mine but I am doing it using what Microsoft give us.

Paint can also be replaced with Paint.net, which, as I recall, was originally launched with this purpose, many years ago.

I have LTSB. The two control settings are a minor annoyance because I installed Classic Shell. My platform doesn't have either the Windows Store, Universal Windows apps, Cortana and the Edge Browser. I'm happy running classic 32 bit desktop apps and I have
no plans to upgrade.

 

I had an issue with the Start Menu which happened yesterday, where it sometimes would not show. It got worse last night, and wasn't opening at all. I tried a few fixes (e.g. sfc and dism) and even a clean boot with no luck. I then tried using System Restore, but the restore failed.

I was left with a mostly non working Start Menu. I could open it after first booting my computer, but soon after that it would only open very occasionally. If I restarted Windows Explorer in Task Manager, it would start working again, but only briefly.

However, it's suddenly started working again. I've just been able to repeatedly open the Start Menu. It's a mystery what was wrong, but it's good that Windows was able to fix itself.
