I love DuckDuckGo for its instant answers, customization and privacy. But is DDG really private? I know DDG originally they didn't share any data with the websites it links you to and it didn't track your IP address. But is is DDG still a private search engine? Do they still respect your privacy?
You can read the comparison between DDG vs StartPage here. Focus on the privacy section. http://securityspread.com/2016/10/24/duckduckgo-startpage-2016-update/ If you value your privacy, besides using a privacy-conscious search engine, don't use Chrome, Chromium and Chromium-based browsers.
Really good read NiteRanger. Thanks. For years I've used SP plus the proxy. I've used DDG just a little but after reading that, it might be less or just for very ho-hum stuff.
I checked start page settings, there is an option for server locations. Will this substitute for a VPN?
So is DDG or Startpage better than https://asciimoo.github.io/searx/#?! Been testing searx for months now..
I'm using Startpage and SearX. FI, I'm using them with browsers in Incognito mode. Apparently, despite setting both to homepage, Chrome/Chromium/Iridium will not open it as homepage but open the Incognito page as homepage instead. I find that Starpage is slightly slower in searching than SearX. If you type the complete URL e.g. wilderssecurity.com it'll open Wilders directly. Typing anything else will bring you to the search page For SearX, same again, typing the complete URL will open Wilders e.g. wilderssecurity.com will open Wilders directly. Typing anything else will bring you 'Page not found' then to SearX home page and you need to re-type and it'll bring to the search page As for result relevance is slightly better for Startpage
I had to switch to DDG from StartPage, the censorship has became too great and I have literally got no results and since Google has started to block "fake" news, it will only get worse.
