An update on chrome, prefetching dns and async dns. (on windows) So in an earlier post I discussed dns prefetching, it was mentioned to me enabling dns prefetch on chrome also enables preconnect. I thought it was not preconnecting but according to this url I am preconnecting when the predict setting is enabled. chrome://dns/ However there is some good news, meaning I can keep predict disabled. It seems when async dns is enabled dns is really fast anyway, but I wondered why I could not enable it as on windows when the --enable-async-dns flag is set, it stays disabled. you can check if enabled on this url. chrome://net-internals/#dns Now I found a problem report page for chrome, about windows async dns, and it seems a developer decided there was no benefit on windows so made it on windows machines the flag is ignored, so how did I enable it? It can still be enabled using the chrome policy editor template, when its enabled in that, async dns is activated. I replied to the problem report to let them know it definitely can have a benefit on windows machines. https://bugs.chromium.org/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=555537 I think predict (prefetch and preconnect) does still help a bit when async dns is activated, but I dont like the idea of DOS'ing http servers with the abusive pre connect so will be turning it off again.

https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!topic/chrome/KuczA2qHmxw "Size: 2.16 GB (2,329,228,186 bytes) Size on disk: 2.17 GB (2,332,430,336 bytes) Contains: 1,475 Files, 194 Folders I've decided to go through my appdata folders to trim down on junk that I've uninstalled completely. I've stumbled upon the Google Chrome folder and found it to be alarmingly huge for a web browser. The largest files are found in... "C:\Users\%UserProfile%\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default\File System\002\t\00" size (bytes) : filename (no extension included!) 313,196,626 00000002 92,961,758 00000003 343,927,224 00000004 414,889,200 00000005 345,399,294 00000006 378,767,840 00000007 no file extension, but looking at them in a hexeditor, they appear to be Rar archives. They're encrypted, getting 7zip to open and view them require a password. MS Security Essentials and Spybot's Search and Destroy didn't find any malware or other. Why are these files here? Are the necessary? Are they incremental? Is there a tool to completely uninstall Google Chrome (appdata folders as well)? I want to do a complete uninstall and deletion of Chrome and then reinstall it again. Would I just end up with these files all over again? I like Chrome, but find it bloated whenever it updates. It keeps the old version of Chrome and the appdata folder builds up over time. It reminds so much of the winsxs directory".
You can uninstall Chrome and delete whole Chrome folder in user profile. After reinstalling you will get clean profile. I'm using CCleaner to clean temp files and similar unnecessary Chrome data. You can give it a try.

Must have been a regression as it was only updated on the 15th. If you don't clean Chrome's cache it can get alarmingly huge. I only delete it so often as it speeds up browsing. Delete everything else except passwords. But yeah, keep an eye on it.
