AVG Antivirus from Avast Beta / Final Thread

from what I could remember way back when I was a AVG hall of famer / AVG guru , it whas equiped with an inhouse outbound firewall only ( AVG I.S. that is )

 

It was based on code licensed from Outpost, and ditto for Avast too. Though both implementations were different. I do not know if any of that old code remains now.

Now that both Avast and avg share the same detection and performance rating according to AVC. Which one would you choose and why?
Which one has more settings?

I'll choose AVG. Better licensing, better design, better GUI.

 

Avast better forum support to problems and bugs + No zen menu like AVG, but its all about the feeling (maybe i give avg a spin)

 

Maybe they'll come out with a AVG Business Free? I actually need it for a school.

Is the hardened mode available on AVG?

 

It seems that AVG has a little bit better performance on AV-Test , than avast.

Performance wise they are almost the same but I think AVG is a little better than avast. Licensing, and GUI is definitely better .

 

They just got rid of Avast free for businesses and schools. Don't count on them bringing it back.

 

If anyone is aware of how Avast works, can they answer this? It appears that the definitions size (including incremental ones) is slightly smaller than the old AVG, and it appears is much smaller than competing products like BitDefender-based AVs which I also observed. For example, BullGuard's hourly update is anything between a few hundred KBs and a few MBs but AVG/Avast has like 1 or 2 MB for the whole day (including the full VPS update).

Despite this, it appears detection levels are quite well-maintained. Can anyone explain to me what's the seekret?

No hardened mode is not available in AVG free, i think this is something avast related.
installed it yesterday on my notebook to see if it is lighter than avast, overall it seems a little bit lighter but needs a 10 seconds more startup time.
(Notebook is only with 2 GB Ram, maybe i stick with AVG on the notebook, but other devices have avast)

 

This only explains how they moved Deepscreen to the Cloud and enhanced it. Avast has had streaming updates for a long time now, and it's offline detection is also very good (AV-C Malware Protection Test). I want to know how they're keeping the offline database small while still managing am excellent offline detection.

 

Most of their detections are labelled as "malware gen"
They have great generic detections, so small definitions files.

 

10 sec is a lot more startup time!!! in fact that's the main reason why i used qihoo 360, for faster startup time.

 

Only if you regularly restart your computer. I only restart my laptop when I really need to, which is as the most every few days, and sometimes I go for a week or so without rebooting. At night, I put my computer to sleep, I never power it off.

Neither. I really do like Avast, but it is unusable because of forced registration, I can not be expected to register all users every year and no, those 3 clicks are way to difficult for common users to do, they usually uninstall it as the result. AVG installs about 20-30 services, even if you disable all modules and it just kills a computer indefinitely. I really hope those issues will get fixed sometimes.
