This is the point that some of us have been hammering on about for ages! It is definitely not clear to many users what ON and OFF mean. I realise that you are busy but I do feel that you need to address this issue so that it becomes more transparent and easy to understand. I am sure that the vast majority of users would think that OFF means that there is no protection, so why use it? You mentioned "Locked" and "Protected" earlier and they would be decent options. As you know this was debated at length last year.

Very true... and obviously it would be super simple to fix, all we have to do is rename a few things. Let's think about it and figure out what we thing would be most clear to everyone. Thank you!

Would using three simple, easily correlated colors on the badge/shield be a consideration? Currently Blue: lock is ON. Red: lock is OFF. . Why not stick to color coding only? Blue (or green): lock is on, yellow: lock is off, VS is running, red: VS is off/disabled. Something like that? On/off plus coloring the badge is confusing, no doubt about it, even to those who think they're used to it, like me.

Yeah, I think part of the problem is that VS started out as a simple computer lock, that locks the computer when it is at risk. It was intended to only perform this function, and to let the AV take care of the rest. The toggling lock is still VS's core concept, but it has evolved throughout the years, so now we are in kind of a fuzzy area ;).

No need to rush it, put it in the pending tray;)

See? VS outgrew its clothes, time for some new ones.

Nobody said anything about "rushing" anything, some people are putting new dimensions on a longstanding topic out of interest!

Maybe it would be clearer for the user, if "Lock" is displayed above ON/OFF:

BTW, we could almost use a lock icon instead... but if we did that, what icon would we use for Lock OFF / Protected? Just a thought!

The preferred term now is thought showering because the politically correct crowd decided that brainstorming could be offensive to people who suffer with cerebral disorders such as epilepsy;)

    Just change the color:
    green for lock on
orange for lock off but still protected
red for lock off and unprotected
    blue for autopilot

If you're going to stick to icons only, maybe a checkmark in the center of an unlocked padlock? I was thinking of strictly color coding the badge, because using words and colors together is too much information. People associate certain things with colors, no need for words in addition. But, I guess not.

mood, I have successfully resisted temptation......:argh::'(

Edit: besides, if you don't use the gadget and only use the tray icon, changing the color is much more obvious an indicator of what VS's status is.

Remember to consider people who are colour blind (almost 1 in 20 users are)

    Hmmm, interesting stapp, thank you!

When I initially chose blue and red, I did so based on research of what colors make people feel safe (blue), and what color tend to alert them (red).

But yeah, we definitely need to take color blindness into consideration as well... Here is an interesting article.

OK, understood about the color issue. I'll say it: the space that's being taken up by the letters V and S-- it's the only tray icon I have with letters on it. Again, if you don't use the larger gadget, how can that little tray icon be modified to use the space the V and S otherwise occupy? And still be visible and understandable? Back to the thought-showering board.

There were many suggestions in this thread last year on this topic and it might be best to review these first before asking for any more. From memory it started around October and here is a link to one of many posts at that time:

On a lighter note..Has anyone seen a VS block/quarantine recommendation for the latest Macrium Reflect update?

Can't say I have. I updated Macrium this morning without a peep from VS. I normally disable when installing/updating but forgot on this occasion. Mind you I'm using Autopilot which I have settled on after trying the other two modes for several months.

EDIT Should perhaps add that Reflect was automatically added again to the Whitelist.

Hmmm...interesting. What VS did not like was the process vpatch.exe with c:\user\appdata\local\temp\_ir_vp2_temp_0\vpatch.exe
    Thanks Cache

If you take out the V and S, do you think an open or closed padlock would fit in there and be easily distinguishable? Looks kind of borderline. This is why color coding would be so useful, acknowledging the caveats like color blindness. I can just see this issue circling right back to baseline again, it's pretty involved, right? Not so simple.
