I just added it and it is grayed out, which it should be. If you enable a group policy it enforces it so that users cannot change the setting, so it enables it then locks it, perfectly normal.

I think he means he does not use WD.

That is obvious, what I want to know is the relevancy of his post following @Trooper settings.

"Hey guys I am so special that I am posting in the thread about Windows Defender that I dont use Windows Defender hahaha xD"

I hope you disable WD services as well, otherwise mpengine is still running and being vulnerable, probably not even being updated.

Unless you have WD configured to do "Limited Periodic Scanning," mpengine never starts up. What I really "love" about this setting is if enabled, WD loads at boot time and sits there using up your ram. And it doesn't matter if you modified its scheduled task to only scan weekly for example. The turkey still loads at boot time. A real POC.

I know I'm an idiot. Thanks for the confirmation. Lack of sleep is completely messing me up of late.

    Cheers.

    @Nightwalker :
If you look at his post here : https://www.wilderssecurity.com/thr...-windows-10-needs.383448/page-32#post-2676364
According to his posting history here, he apparently came back to Wilders after not having posted here for nine years (9 !!), just to tell us that he's in desperate need of a fresh reinstallation of his OS since he has managed to screw it up badly.
Nobody else has experienced those issues he claims having.

My guess is that it's just one of the usual nonsense-posters, who has reactivated an old double-account to spread even more nonsense.

Regarding updates: Does it update after startup or only at a specific time? o_O

In the latest Insider build (16215) there is an interesting feature within Windows Defender Security Center UI called Protected Folders. It seems that you can protect folders on a per-program basis and create custom protected folders as well. You specify which programs are trusted to access these protected folders and all other programs are denied access. Very interesting.

It also states that Windows system folders by default are already protected folders and therefore only specified trusted programs can be granted access.

Or RansomOff Folder protection ... Interesting indeed.
But yes, given the increasing native security of Win 10, it seems 3rd party security softs increasingly will have less to offer, and more potential incompatibilities.

I like the Protected Folders feature; the thing is, if you have a third party antivirus installed, could you still avail yourself of this feature via the Security Center? I would hope not, this feature should be redundant and not accessible through one means, or am I wrong? Insofar as additional ransomware protections, I choose what security software I install on my computer, they're third party standalones and would hope that with the upcoming build, it'll be a conflict-free experience from the start.

This Protected Folders feature is within the Windows Defender Security Center UI, however it is on a separate tab similar to how SmartScreen is on a separate tab. So my assumption here is that if a user had a third party AV installed, it would likely just disable the Defender AV scanning only, while SmartScreen, Protected Folders and other features of WDSC would still be active.

Interesting indeed, seems they are finally trying to offer a bit more HIPS-like features, and apparently Win Defender now also has behavior blocking capabilities? No wonder that other AV companies are getting a bit nervous.
