In light of the Ransomware attack this past week, I was curious if OSes running in VM needed to be updated if you are NOT connecting to the internet in VM? I even removed the NAT from the VMware hardware configuration. I am using XP in VMware, but this question also applies to other OSes/VMs, such as Virtualbox.

Windows in VM can be infected by malware but it can't break out to the host since its running in its own virtual environment.

I know that Windows in VM can be infected and can't infect the host. If Windows in VM can't connect to the internet, does that protect the OS in VM? I also know that any program that is infected and run in VM will also Infect the OS in VM. Assuming that the Programs I install the OS in VM are clean and I can't connect to the internet in the VM, am I safe?

If you don't connect to the Internet, you're safe.

But if you install Linux, you could connect to the Internet.

I am using XP for old software and games that don't run on Win10. Don't need the Internet in VM.

One advantage to the VM's is even if trashed just restore a snapshot and it's clean

Malware jumping from the VM to the Host system:

    - if shared folder enabled: possible especially ransomwares.
    - if no shared folders: very unlikely but still possible

Actually, i am using shared folders but the said folder is isolated via Sandboxie and Guarded via Appguard :D

If you have Appguard, also I would add all the VM processes to guarded apps.

You can run them on Windows 10 in compatibility mode.

Nope...Compatibility mode doesn't help. In fact, I have never seen compatibility mode work in any version of Windows.
