so how is this 2017 version? it scores 3rd place in the latest AV Performance test but it it really light? Tom's Guide's review of the 2016 version said it had a significant performance imapct. I am not able to try the demo as the demo is for the Live Safe and I am only interested in the AV
1) Very slow scanning for the Cloud AV, no option to choose what to scan 2) No exclusions options 3) It detected an FP and auto quarantined it, no option to restore it! My file is gone! https://s25.postimg.org/y6f1fpne7/image.png https://s25.postimg.org/67kvoulrj/image.png https://s25.postimg.org/7nwe6zoof/image.png https://s25.postimg.org/4v36myobz/image.png https://s25.postimg.org/ccce26dv3/image.png https://s25.postimg.org/g9znrl0of/image.png https://s25.postimg.org/986bj4mgf/image.png https://s25.postimg.org/rc9c3rk4v/image.png https://s25.postimg.org/4ou2xm4kv/image.png https://s25.postimg.org/n5ohofkj3/image.png
i am using Total Security in my computer and Laptop and they both run well . lighter than the 2016 version . I do not know how well it performs against threats but till now seems fine. I feel no slow downs at all only a few seconds 20 or 25 delay in the start up but i do not mind it at all as i am not in a hurry
Very nice pictures, thank you Papusan. I don't understand why most of the cloud AV only have idiotic autoquarantine, in case of a false positive your system could be dead ...
McAfee Cloud AV 0.5.235.1 https://home.mcafee.com/Secure/CloudAV/CloudAVHome.aspx?ctst=1#5 http://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/mcafee_cloud_av.html
Sadly, that's how the majority of antiviruses work these days. I just switched to Avast, as it's very light, and at least its very easy to restore and whilelist quarantined files.
it's just like BD Free AV, 0 control but at least in BD after it detects a file, you can still restore it and exclude it, not with this, my file is gone and I had a hard time to find it online never touching this again
Just downloaded the Total Protection, and i got that old ugly interface? What Version do you have? Where to get?
I havven't gotten the McAfee 15.1 update. I'm still running McAfee Internet Security 15.0. I'm not sure of this, but I think the update hasn't been rolled out to most countries yet. My McAfee product re seller sold me a license from the Asian Pacific, and that's probably why I've yet to get the update.
Details on the new McAfee can be found here: https://service.mcafee.com/webcenter/portal/cp/home/articleview?locale=en-US&articleId=TS101107 https://community.mcafee.com/external-link.jspa?url=http://service.mcafee.com/FAQDocument.aspx?&id=TS102597 Apparently the new McAfee uses an "LAM" (Lightweight Anti-malware) engine and is not yet complete, however its less of a resource hog.
^LAM = Cloud-based engine, old signatures gone, if you are under a proxy-restricted internet access, use intranet, or run offline (I do), the cloud is basically inactive and your system is in danger. Thanks, but no thanks. McAfee was at least good detection-wise before this "LAM" thingy....
Have you tested any of the next generation McAfee products that use the new LAM engine? If not, then your criticisms are entirely assumptive. However, McAfee does not provide in program proxy settings, and only uses the system wide one, which may cause issues in network environments you've mentioned.
@anon @zfactor I noticed NOD32 is affecting the performance of my Samsung 960 PRO SSDs and then I read a similar thread on the ESET Forums. So in a hunt for another light AV, after seeing that McAfee AV has become light as it sits right next to ESET's low performance impact in the latest AV-Comparatives test results, I decided to give it a go. The license for the AV only was more expensive than the Internet Security Suite but I don't like these suites, just need an AV, so I bought it for $59 USD [ouch!] When I first installed it, my Logitech G900 Wireless Gaming mouse started stuttering like no tomorrow, the UI was laggy, I wasn't having a good first impression..... Then I reboot after the installation, ran a full system scan which was very fast considering I have around 5TB of data...... - 0 False positives of viruses detected - 3 PUPs detected, but the good thing is, you can see what they are and hit allow all, very easy to whitelist them that way - After the reboot, no more mouse stuttering and the UI isn't laggy anymore. I bought a single license but was surprised to know that I can install it on all my PCs/Macs/phones and tablets......... anyone knows what's the limit? like how many PCs that I own can I install it on? It's surprising how McAfee was known to be the heaviest AV / IS on the planet, and what they've become now....... Also, I only bought the AntiVirus Plus, but I see it has a firewall built in, I don't know if that's just showing me the windows Firewall or its own Firewall, kinda weird for an AV only to have a Firewall Finally, anyone knows how to add exclusions?
Please provide more information (ideally in our forum at https://forum.eset.com) about the performance issues you are having. We would welcome if you could provide us with a Process Monitor log for perusal. We are not aware of any issues with SSD drives except with one concerning an older version of a Samsung benchmark application (SBA), however, this issue shouldn't affect other applications that don't do the same type of operations like benchmark applications do. Also according to our analysis the issue didn't occur with the latest version of the SBA.
After testing this for a few days, it has beat NOD32 in terms of performance, as in, it is lighter. Once you install it the system becomes laggy and the mouse stutters, just reboot then run a full system scan and all is snappy again Also there is an option in the settings to choose to scan files striking a balance between performance and security, or thorough (more performance impact), or light ( very low performance impact). I chose the light Also, during installation, I chose custom and unchecked the McAfee Site Advisor, I don't need no site advisor daddy, just a fast local file scanning AV I bought a single license for the AntiVirus Plus which covers all your computers / mobile devices in a single license, no a a bad deal Initial system scan is very fast: Also, when it detects False Positives (in my case, it caught only 3), it doesn't auto delete / auto quarantine them by default so that's nice touch, you can then whitelist all the detections in one shot very easily
I had to strip this from my test server as it was grinding it to an almost halt. Trying to open task manager was taking upshot of 4 mins, removed and put 360TS back on and server back to full speed, flying again
This user interface is something every AV should learn -- showing charts of necessary statistics instead of fancy buttons or big "You are safe" text.
I just received an update to McAfee 15.1 R2 (from 14 R13) and it's definitely much lighter on my system. The GUI is the same, however settings for real-time scanning have been removed. It also looks like McAfee's cloud AV component has been integrated.
I finally got 15.1 R2 pushed out on all my machines. Its running super light on all my machines and protection has been good for all my machines. Each of my machines uses a combo of McAfee and Webroot and all the them have remained without any malware issues. I am very impressed with the new cloud McAfee and the protection I get for the price I pay.
