Just found another cleaning program - DISM++, fantastic cleaning features in that one. Reduced the size of my Os with amazing 1,5gb. BB Cleaner Pro as i mentioned back in post #22 and DISM++ is the cleaning future for me from now on.
Been using CrapCleaner and Diskkeeper for as far as I can remember. And don't ask me again what CrapCleaner is. It is the original name for CCleaner. BTW a watered down version of Diskkeeper is what Windows used for many years. Been around a very long time.
Boredog What is your OS and what version of Diskeeper are you using? I had used DK for several years until Win 8.1. The then current version of DK was not compatible with 8.1, despite Condusiv's claim that it was. I subsequently tried newer versions up to v 15 when they were released. My conclusion was that the newer versions s7c$ed. The auto background InvisiTasking, DK's main selling point, simply did absolutely nothing. [The last post on The Diskeepeer Forum is from two years ago -- think maybe they shut it down cuz of all the problems peeps were having post WIN 8.1.] So you got me interested and I checked out the Condusiv site and discovered the all new V 16. which adds a new DRAM caching feature (not sure it's of any more benefit than keeping core files and drivers in memory), the idea being to prevent fragmentation before it happens and to speed up your PC by decreasing I/Os. It still has a manual defrag and is said to have "Instant Defrag" for critical file ragmentation, but I don't believe you can actually call it a defragger anymore. Condusiv doesn't -- IMHO they are distancing themselves from the decline of DK as a defragger. It doesn't even have any visual display of your your HDD that shows fragmentation. One can't even tell what degree of fragmentation exists on the HDD from the GUI. Instead the focus is on I/Os eliminated that is said to speed up your PC. So I downloaded the new DK 16 Pro and am giving it a try. Too early to tell, but at least it's clearly compatible with Win 10 AU. http://www.condusiv.com/business/diskeeper/professional/features/default.aspx If I like it I'll try to get a second mortage on my PC to pay for it.
It's excellent, I've been using for for over ten years and It's safe to use, unlike most of the alternatives.
While you were using DK 16, did you notice very long boot times and shutdown? Because that's what I experienced when I trialed DK 16.
CCleaner and MS Disk Cleanup for unnecessary files, MS Defrag and Optimize own tool. Since Win 8, I don't touch the Registry or Services anymore, however I use Task Manager to disable some startup utilities.
Unless you have a lot of software installed, it's probably not worth buying it. Aside from the usual cleanup functions, it monitors the system for new startup items and services, and gives you the option to disable them or delay startup to improve boot times. It also includes a Hyper Boost option which takes some time to run and includes defragging to further boost startup times. I can't give any insight into how well Hyper Boost works as I have a SSD on the computer I'm running System Speedup on.
While I haven't been using it for anywhere near 10 years, I agree that it is excellent. I have it installed on 2 different computers.
I've been using PrivaZer for a fair while now. It seems to do the job and has never given any problems.
I am using Diskeeper version 16 Home. I like it's logging feature. and BTW, yes it still does defragging both auto and manual.
Yes I did. PC would neither Restart nor Shut Down -- it just hung requiring a hard power off. I had to uninstall it. While I doubt I would have bought it because of the steep price, it was doing an excellent job - both at keeping my fragmentation extremely low ( .02% - .03% ) without doing any manual defrag and in speeding my PC up with it's DRAM Caching. Particulalry impressive in light of the fact I am usually on my PC 14 -18 hours/day.
With mine, I waited, and it usually finishes, but after about 5 minutes. Maybe yours didn't hang. But surprisingly now, after OS "refresh" and the installation of DK 16, I don't experience long boot times already. Boot, restart and shutdown times returned to normal. I knew that DRAM caching was the cause of long boot times, but it's turned on now, and everything works normally.
If it ain't broke don't fix it. I just had to restore a computer because the user "cleaned" the registry ...
Just about every registry cleaner has issues with false positives, which can lead to problems. Even the registry cleaner in CCleaner has occasional issues with false positives.
