Defender In Anniv. Edition is also failing to update via Settings, but does update via its interface. This just started today. I tried DISM, SFC, standalone Windows update troubleshooter which claimed to fix some things. Still happening.

Suspect it's my machine, but this just seemed too coincidental.

Is this only on CU or in other version also (AU)?

I download definitions and manually installed.
Looks OK, what version of definitions do you have?

I have updates failing on two machines here lately too. I've ony been using Limited Periodic Scanning so not a big deal for me. Disabled LPS for now.

The definitions download but the installation fails; it happens only via Settings. Download and install are fine via the Defender interface. You think the time/server issue would be applicable if it fails to install? Weird, I hope it "fixes" itself, researching the error code yielded some complicated fix that included registry changes, command lines, etc. :cautious: Oh, this is Anniversary Update. Changed Internet time to sync with time.nist.gov instead of Windows.

Edit: Still happened the next day which had me concerned it wouldn't install other updates.

After trying the .NET Repair Tool without success, I went ahead and reinstalled Windows. I suspected I did this myself, but was hoping it was some more global issue. Nope. Oh well, it works now.:)

Personally, I haven't had a problem but I check often to make sure updates are coming through.

I've been running it since I installed the Creators Update, while waiting for other vendors to release their patches for it. I haven't had a single issue, other than feeling like it isn't enough. I just still can't bring myself to trust it enough to catch anything. This version is an impressive step forward though.

It's a shame that WD seems to be no less CPU heavy in Creators Update than Anniversary Edition.

Sorry to hear it is still heavy for you. That's not the experience I have had. I'm running out of reasons to get rid of it. I interact with 3 PCs daily that have been updated and they are all noticeably faster than they were before. I've got licenses for 3 different security suites and have been running Defender while waiting on them all to become fully compatible with the update. In the mean time I've been having no issues and am now not sure I want to put any of them back on. I don't miss the crashes, BSODs and slowdown they were giving me. Previously the slowdown with Defender was worse. Now it is not.

I am running it on two machines at the moment. One desktop and one laptop. Not having any of these issues either. Could it be hardware related for him? Or maybe a clean install? I still am not sure if I feel fully "safe" with it which would be the main reason for me going back to a third party av.

I have seen a very noticable boost in performance from upgrading to Creators Update. But on slower computers, even though Creators Update tun very well (a lot better than previous builds of Windows 10), WD still causes very noticable slowdowns at times.
A clean install doesn't help. These are computers with fairly slow Core 2 Duo processors, but as I said, Windows itself runs fine.
