Imho, trusting a Chinese security company to safeguard your system is like 'trusting the fox to watch over the henhouse'.
@Scott W : What company would you trust else? American Australian British Canadian Crotian Dutch French German Hungarian Korean (south) New Zealand Russian Rumänian Slovakian Spanish Türkish .... I say: Never trust one of the Five Eyes! (FVEY have been spying on one another's citizens and sharing the collected information with each other in order to circumvent restrictive domestic regulations on surveillance of citizens) Cheers
Tencent is mentioned in the MBRFilter thread. Anyone know if it would be compatible with Norton, Malwarebytes, etc? Normally one can't use two A-Vs, however, being cloud based may make a difference. Thank you!
@ratchet PC Manager is a full antivirus so you shouldn't run it alongside another antivirus as there could be issues. However, you can use it with Malwarebytes, as MBAM is compatible with antiviruses.
I am currently using Avast but looking for something lighter since the most recent version of Avast is reported to slow down your computer. I am using an older laptop with XP sp3. I have a few questions about Tencent PC Manager: Does Tencent use BitDefender engine? Would it be light on an older laptop? After it is installed, how much space would it use on the laptop? How difficult is it to uninstall? Thanks for the help.
It uses Bitdefender, is one of the lightest antiviruses there is and as a result should run really well on an older laptop. It easy to uninstall. There can be issues uninstalling the Chinese language version due to language difficulties, but you should have no trouble uninstalling the international version. I have no idea how much disk space it uses, as this is something I never take notice of. It's a decent antivirus in my opinion, but I stopped using it due to some issues, which may or may not have been fixed since I stopped using it. Tencent release an updated version every week or two. On occasion, when you receive a notication, the whole notication window is entirely black, and as a result you can't see anything. This is fixed by restarting Windows. Also, it had trouble quarantining threats that were running at time. It would say it had quarantined them, but they were actually still running.
Roger, Thank you so much for the information and your impressions. Tencent has rather impressive test results at AV-Comparative. I'm hoping to talk to someone who is currently using it. Is there anyone on Wilder's who is currently using Tencent? I'm also considering 360. Do you think Tencent would be lighter than 360? Thanks again.
Roger, I have a few more questions: To uninstall the international version, do you just go to "Add Remove Programs" and uninstall? Do you need to do that in safe mode? Are the BitDefender virus definitions updated several times during the day? How long ago did you last use it and have these problems? Thanks
Yes, you uninstall it from Add/Remove Programs, and there's no need to do it in Safe Mode. I'm not too sure on the frequency of updates. It's probably about four months since I uninstalled it.
I dropped Tencent PC-Manger, to install on customers machines, because ZAM flags and kills it, and there is no German version. Also the weekly notifications for upgrade irritate my customers, making my phone ring.... It may be a decent AV, but I prefer BD-free-2016, because it is quite.
Upgrade to the latest program version. You get a large window, asking if you want to upgrade. If you choose to upgrade, then it downloads and installs the latest version. This happens quite often, as new program versions are released sometimes as often as every week.
strange, softpedia says the current version was released on feb. 9th http://www.softpedia.com/dyn-search.php?search_term=tencent
This is the PC Manager website. Sadly, they never publish changelogs. It is usually best for any software you download, to get it from the publisher's website, rather than using third party download sites, to ensure you get the latest version.
Yes, you are right, but on their homepage they don't write what's the current version, you have to download it to know that
Yes, but the version is part of the filename, so you can see as soon as the download starts, what version is being downloaded.
I installed Tencent (with BitDefender engine) on my old laptop. I works fine and doesn't slow it down. However, I am disappointed because it uses 250 mb more space and 250 mb more RAM than Avast. I am wondering about using the Tencent TAV version which doesn't use the BitDefender engine. It only uses their own engines and the cloud. The download is only 28mb so the space on the computer would likely be minimal. But I am concerned about it's detection ability without BitDefender Has anyone had any experience with the TAV version? Does it use less RAM? What would it's detection be like compared to the version with BD? Thanks for your help and experience.
I've never used the TAV version, so can't give an opinions on it. The RAM usage shouldn't matter, unless you system is low on RAM. How much RAM do you have in your system? Also, if you open Task Manager, what is the memory usage shown? If it's well under 74% you've still got plenty of free RAM.
Thanks for this clarification. I have another laptop with only 1GB of RAM. I guess I would run into problem with it if I used Tencent on it. Is this a correct assumption?
