Hi all, As some of you may recall, several years ago I used to put in a lot of time assisting TrueCrypt users here on Wilders. I also did similar work, to an even greater degree, in the TrueCrypt forums as username 'Dan'. However, when TrueCrypt suddenly shut down, taking the TrueCrypt forums with it, I lost interest in the project and I eventually chose to discontinue my efforts. To tell the truth, I had begun burning out long before then, as the task felt endless, and what's worse, it had also begun to feel pointless. I felt that my time and energy would be better spent elsewhere. I could go on, but I think I'll just keep this short. I feel that at this point, with TrueCrypt dead and gone, there ought not to be any more amateur TrueCrypt users. Everybody who is not an expert user should have migrated by now, and the experts can (of course) take care of themselves. So I'm back on Wilders, and I will probably be contributing here and there, but I'm not planning on doing a whole lot of TrueCrypt support. There are other capable members here, and I'm happy to see some familiar faces. Hi guys! -dantz
Welcome back fellow LTRM of yesteryear. I miss the TC forum days too. I hit a wall on some of those lost this, broke that, queries. Usually I make pre-problem planning or precaution responses to avoid the next time on the broken stuff threads here. Sometimes its too time consuming to sit for an hour coding the solution for the millionth time. Its so avoidable with the most simple prep. Hey, are you inside VC code yet, or do you have any interest? I left Windows so my system disk coding is fading some. I still do the archive side of the house, but using Linux means LUKS for system disk now.
Hi Palancar. No VC yet, I'm sticking with TC for now. Actually, I'm hardly doing any coding or programming anymore. I spend more time outdoors.
Thanks for your contributions from way back then - I learned from your contributions and good to "see" you back in whatever form. Not exactly expert, but have held back from the VC migration until the audit. No real excuse now, other than the lure of the outdoors!
Its not TC or VC. I am in the "school of hard knocks" on the Serpent algo. Working with combining essiv and Serpent into headers. Dan, if Hawaii in your account's location status is in fact accurate, then I can easily see why you spend time outdoors!! Jealous
Where do you recommend we migrate to? I never used TC before but looking for something similar and free. Everybody needs some time away from forums for the Hawaiian surf; makes the heart go fonder. Welcome back.
DANTZ! Welcome back. The threads you have provided help on have been invaluable in learning about encryption and trying to troubleshoot TC problems. By far, your posts are the best resource for troubleshooting TC on the internet. Glad you've rediscovered the great outdoors, though. I hope you can help me. I have a hard drive that was whole-disk encypted with, I believe, Truecrypt 7.1a. It is an external usb hard drive. It is recognized by win7 when I plug in its usb cable to the pc's usb port. When I fire up Truecrypt and mount the drive, my passphrase is accepted but it takes about 10 minutes for the drive to finally show a mounted status and then shortly thereafter, Truecrypt auto-dismounts it while issuing an error message that does not really give any information about what the problem is. How would I go about diagnosing if the problem is a Truecrypt related problem or is a hard drive problem?
What is the error message? TrueCrypt either works or it doesn't. There generally isn't a 10-minute wait before you find out. This is most likely either a drive problem or a USB interface problem. Have you tried plugging your external drive into another PC? If that doesn't make any difference then you might have to raw-clone your entire external drive onto another disk.
