I wish some of you were there too the feedback would have been even more useful. ;)

I was mainly more into detection and virus lab related discussions where I made quite some points about double extension malware and the current state of ransomware coming from .js files. We were able to do quite a bit of poking (rejz, zfactor and me).We even messed around with the avast team a little bit.You guys should ask z about it.

I had some discussion with the AV-C guys there too as usual I have been known to have my gripes with their test beds.
Anyone could have guessed what I will speak about. :)

Sucks man maybe we could have done alot more. But there is always a next time. :)

There are certain changes that I have suggested to be made in the detection routine but that may depend on their internal statistics to make the decision to make such rules.Martin told me he will look into it and see what can be done.

On the other hand,I have lot of respect for what Avast is giving us for free and I haven't seen so much passion in one room at our roundtable and their virus lab is like a passion machine.

crusher, i have a small "test" setup if you will call it that or even call it small really. i have currently 28 desktop and laptop systems running pretty much every av out there. (those are just the ones in my office room for testing that does not include my gaming desktop or any of our personal machines) i test a very large number of samples and test for performance and all other areas. as far as eset i also run avira, eset and webroot on various systems (my wife has a desktop and a laptop, my daughter has a gaming laptop as well as a school laptop. my wife has her work computers at her business as well as at my offices) so i use multiple av's to keep up on and test various av's. my primary two i usually use are eset and avast now and avira on a few systems. others are for testing. i also play with decompiling and decryption etc etc, i just enjoy doing these things. hope that explains everything.

they will eventually be fully merged to one product, so anything they will in the end be keeping will remain. i do not believe every last thing from avg will remain, but everything important will. it will take a while though so they dont upset a LOT of people.

if you re read my post i edited it to use different words. i think soon was to rushed of a word to use. it will eventually happen but they have to tread carefully so as not upset millions of people. what they need to do is in the beginning let people know its avast behind avg. then over time they can start to bring the products together as one. i dont see anything before 2018 at the earliest IMO. again note IMO. they could surprise people and make it quicker no one knows though.

know whichever you currently use the engines and detection should be very similar and i dont think we will see a huge difference IMO in tests. i would use which ever ui you prefer and enjoy it. and im sure when they do merge products anyone on avg will be moved to avast without any issues.

  14. RE: all speculations about the future of AVG

From a brand equity and brand strategy point of view killing AVG brand is unlikely.

    Brand equity
Why pay 1.3 billion on brand equitye and take the brand out of the market. That does not make sense. Brand equity is market value related to a brand's appeal to customers. When you take the brand name out of the market, the equity you paid for is gone and worth nothing, niente, nada niets. No CFO in his right mind would burn away such an amount of money (repeat and read out loud: 1.3 billion!).

AVG brand care and Avast brand promotion
AVG has its own user base in consumer market and its own profile in the corporate market. A free Anti_virus has little switching costs for the enduser (they paid nothing, so they don't throw money away when switching to another free antivirus). So Avast has to take "post merger (AVG) brand care" and "promote their (AVAST) brand" for this volantile user base to keep them hooked to the new AVG-AVAST family.

From a brand promotion point of view Avast should mark its ownership by doing something benificial for the existing AVG consumer market users. ZEN is a nice idea only implemented in the wrong way (put in the face of their customers), AVAST could make the local ZEN functionality available from a central internet portal, like Sophos does now.

Web-Zen would be the consumer market version of Avast Business Cloud management console. For AVAST users the merger has a clear benefit (AVG IPS behavioral module), for AVG users the merger would make sense to remove an annoyance (ZEN) and replace it by something good from Avast (ZEN Cloud powered by Avast business). Add parental control features to Zen-cloud and it is a clear proof of the Avast brand promise to protect home and family :)

AVG-AVAST brand positioning and market focus
In some corporate (B2B) markets it is a disadvantage when you are a consumer brand. Antivirus companies operating in the B2B often mention their corporate strenght security (the first thing Sophos free tells you is that it is based on a business solution). So it looks like a consumer market image is not considered an advantage in the corporate market segement in the security industry (but this is a guess).

Avast is a leader in the consumer market. When they would like to expand in the corporate market, it could be faster and more effectively realized using the AVG brand (AVG probably has a better B2B market share anyway). With the AVG brand AVG-AVAST can build trust and gain market share in the B2B corporate market faster than by operating under the AVAST brand. So the AVG brand has time to market value for AVAST when AVAST wants to grow in the corporate market (but I don't know whether Avast would like to grow in a 20-50 dollar per seat B2B market)

Bottem Line: would love to help Avast to accelerate their brand and business development ;)

Z maybe right here guys.I had to rewind back to the avast forum thread where vlk mentioned this but it wasn't fully confirmed whether or not it will happen.

We aren't allowed to disclose it anyway even if someone has told us so lets keep some of this info private.

One of my laptops I had not used for a month or two, was running the beta version of AVG. I used it last night for the first time in a while, and then powered if off. When I started it today, AVG automatically upgraded to the latest version.

I like the UI a lot. However, what I really do not like, is that there is no option to whitelist files when restoing them from quarantine. This is a deal breaker for me. On my main laptop, I'm currently running a trial of Panda Internet Security. I do not like the UI of Panda, and in general feel that AVG offers better protection. But, Panda does whitelist files when restoring them from quaratine, and also it prompts me when the realtime protection detects a threat, with the option to whitelist the file. If AVG made it easier to whitelist files, then I most likely would switch from Panda. Also, I would like the option to be prompted when a threat is found, with the option to whitelist the file.

I had been using the AVG beta without any problems at all until the latest update. Now it will not allow any email to be sent or received at all. The only fix was to uninstall it and install Avira in it's place.

When starting a scan it stuck at 0 % for several minutes with initialising until the scan really starts, that's odd.

They are not going to merge these 2 products, they will stay avast and AVG.

One company, two different names with the same engine and signatures.
