Would you pay for an email account? Or are free accounts from Gmail, Outlook, Yahoo, etc. good enough for you?
I've paid $20USD/year since 2009 to eNom.com for a package of 10 unique addresses to avoid web mail. (plus more $ for my own domain name).
Yes, under two conditions: a. I had a really horrendous experience involving my free email acct. b. All emails are now pay-for-use. It would be difficult to persuade one to pay when one is used to free. It would be like making you pay for your operating system.
Many free accounts are ephemeral; here today, gone tomorrow. With the "big boys" accounts (Gmail, yahoo, etc.) you will likely be forced to an address like "charlieXWB98*223@gmail.com" or the like. ISP providers are solid, but if you change provider, so changes your email address(es). Necessitating contacting EVERYONE you know to advise of changes. (This has plagued me many times over the years.) I opted for domain & hosting ~$26/yr for "forever" and unlimited email addresses w/ 25Gb storage.
I pay for StartMail by Ixquick/StartPage. Free email can come with a price that isn't monetary. It's very nice, 1 click PGP, and claims to keep no logs. It's worked with every other client I've tried it with. My favorite free ones are Vmail & Yandex.
Yes, but: - I should have the assurance that it keep for a long time ( impossible to require forever, I believe ). - it have to be compatible and convertible with all other email clients.
Yes, I use FastMail and have for years. Just a spare email in case my other emails go bad. Only costs $12 U.S a year.
It depends what is has to offer and if the user need these extra features. In general a paid account won't get deleted after some weeks/months of "inactivity", some offer IMAP only with a paid account, etc...
I've been a paid user of FastMail for 12 years. I started out as a free user, and then upgraded to a paid account when I needed more storage,
I use 3 free email accounts: Gmail main, Outlook (hotmail), and Tiscali. Yes there are privacy issues which can only be dealt by encryption, but gmail has probably the best spam filters and all sort of services for free. If I were a medical doctor or a lawyer I would pay for an email account and use encryption. Seeing how even Hillary Clinton could not stop people hacking into her email account as a State Secretary, I doubt that any of the paid ones would insure complete privacy.
I have a paid FastMail account and a free gmx account (with aliases) for forums and junk. My ISP provided email service is unreliable.
I have a couple of free [legacy plan] Fastmail accounts, but are both limited to 15 MB each. I have had them for at least 10 years. I voted for: depends whats offered for the service.
I pay for a secure email. But I also have several free online accounts. Obviously I only use the paid subscription for private important mail and the rest for the net.
I might be willing to pay for it, but it has to have a fast and nice looking GUI. The ones from Yahoo and Gmail are dreadful.
I use Incredimail, but it's buggy. Many difficulties to import the old emails from Incredimail XE to Incredimail 2.5.
- Temporary email for crappy things that are likely generating spam / Free - Fastmail for common things, since many years / Paid - ProtonMail for important emails and between ProtonMail users / Free
I believe you can say that I'm paying for it. Running Verizon Fios - Internet / Phone / TV / Web Email.
httpx://www.reagan.com/ "Unlike some of the largest email service providers like Google, Yahoo, AOL, and Hotmail, @Reagan.com will not copy, scan, or sell a single word of your email content. Your "Private" email will stay "Private"!"
These days I just pay for hosting of my own email address. I got caught out with Lavasoft, when that suddenly disappeared taking all my mails with it. Its now backed up over several devices. Good judgement comes from experience. Experience comes from poor judgement
Well, you have a point. I am still somehow not convinced about using Yandex as my primary email (migrating from gmail) even if it's much better than gmail in every aspect. The only private email which has a good GUI is Protonmail, Tutanota GUI sucks. IHMO.
