From the FWIW Dept... I've just finished working with MAX2 (and previously with Peter2150) concerning a bug that apparently exists in the Beta testing of Malwarebytes v3 and Macrium Reflect. A large amount of storage appears in innocuous places and it doesn't go away automatically like it's supposed to (I believe it was VSS related but Peter will be able to explain more in that area). Both Peter and Max2 may explain more if they wish... but the best action at this point would be to go back to Malwarebytes v2 until the issue has been dealt with.
You also need to make a recovery media, USB or CD. Should something trash the drive you might get anything but no OS found. Then there is no Pre-OS console
MBAM 3 still has a lot of issues if you look at their forum. the dude working on my BSOD issue is on vacation till the 9th of Jan. after reverting back to a November image and getting 2.0 back all those pesky files in the sys vol info folder are gone. I think before that they took up 14 gigs on my HD. I was feeling sorry for those using SSD drives.
On the MBAM3 issues, It's not just macrium but any images with VSS. The problem is this. VSS opens a snapshot file in the SVI folder on the root of the drive. It's hidden and it's owner ship is changed. Normally these files are deleted after the imaging finishes but the MBAM 3 Ransomware module prevents that. Simplest solution is run MBAM 3 and just disable the ransomware module and then you will be fine.
Max2 was only imaging his System volume and 20+gB appeared on a totally different volume and never went away... really strange.
If that's the case, why would I be upgrading to v3 to begin with if the Ransomeware module is broken? Wasn't that one of the main features with v3?
Well it still has the other modules like Exploit which I don't care about. But also scan speed has been significantly improve. Also in testing I did all the ransomware was caught by MB2 and MB3 with ransomware module off.
peter I was running mbam 3.0 with ransomware module disabled because I have Winpatrol WAR installed and was still getting those pesky files build up. but that was just my machine. there is way too many ongoing issues with 3.0 and I am still happy with 2.0 and all my other layers. OVERKILL I really like Marcrium Reflect though and it has saved me behind may times.
here is the partitions I do a full back up of. besides having it in the windows boot menu I have Msrcrium boot to a 256 gig USB stick and usualy restore my entire hard drive with that. I think it creates about 14 mrimg files on the USB stick.
Macrium Reflect(Pro) I have a laptop windows seven..In my haste I cleaned up and put windows seven back on it and with the help of someone at another forum accidentally removed HP back up partition to get all the space on the hard drive, Now I want to make sure if I have to have a back up of all my stuff plus more is this a great program easy to learn and follow? if and when I do make a mistake to get all my info back and more? So what is the first thing I do after install of Macrium? and thank you all for the help my laptop is running great not a single issue right now G
Once setup, the application is pretty much trouble free... it depends on how you want to use it and its features. If you make a mistake (or other major error), it will return your System to your last backup version. Following installation, you should immediately make a Recovery Media CD/DVD or UFD... this will be required if you're to restore this System following a complete disk failure. If you plan to do other restorations following testing/updates.etc., you should also install Macrium's BOOT Menu Option which will place a copy of its Recovery Media in a BOOT menu that Windows will offer you on the way to BOOTing up... this is probably the fastest way to access your Recovery Media should you need it, but it isn't absolutely necessary. Why don't you tell us a little about how you think you might want to use it... in real life, how often to backup, what kind of backups. That gives us a better idea on how we can direct you in using it.
I just want to make sure that if something goes south..I can get back online and get my programs and data back to normal!..like where do I store the back-up? and does it make another partition on my laptop? I dont do beta testing as heavy as I used to so I am cool there. That partition I removed had the HP back up on it so if I did mess up I could just restore to that and I feel like a fool for removing it..but as Mariah said **** happens lol
and Peter says you Frogman are cool and vouches for you, thank you Peter BOOT Menu Option?? where does a guy acquire this?? Windows PE 3.1--right?
It makes no partitions... you must provide a partition, separate from the one(s) being imaged, as a place for those images to reside. If it's created on the same physical disk as the partitions being imaged, it will work but will be risky. If that disk goes bad, you will lose both your imaged partition(s) AND the backup images of those partitons. Most users put the saved images on, at least, another separate disk, and at most, an external disk (USB3 preferred) so it , most likely, won't be affected by a hardware internal System failure. Your backup process may be automated (if you know what you want) or it may be manual, whatever your desire. Once you've begun to build your system (personal applications/data), that HP partition is basically useless. If you ever restored to it, you would get nothing but your out-of-box configuration... just like it came from the store. Your Macrium image is much more useful.
Reflect will build it for you when you use the "Backup/Other Tasks/Add a BOOT menu option" feature. You may use any Windows PE you wish (all should work)... PE3.1 is Windows 7-based, PE10 is Windows 10-based. PE10 contains the richest included hardware driver set so will, most likely, work on almost all hardware.
RollbackFrog...so all i need is a usb/jump drive? how big? I have quite a few around 16 and a 32 gig i think? so i need to copy that initial partition to that usb drive?
And, some of us learned the hard way that you should even back-up that external disk as sometimes external HD's go bad! So, now I have 2 external HD's; one backs up the other.
Macrium Reflect will do this for me correct? or is this another product I need to obtain? and thank you both for your help means the world..
