Hey all! I've been using SpiderOak for cloud backups for almost 5 years now. Fortunately I haven't needed to use the service for restoration of files except maybe once or twice, but it's nice to know my files are safely backed up in case something does happen.

Anyways, yesterday I realized that nothing had been synchronized to SpiderOak for about a week. At first I thought it was my firewall or network, but something was wrong... I couldn't get a sign-in link from the desktop app, and trying to sign in from the website resulted in an invalid username/password error. Nothing was noted in their social media (I thought maybe it was an outage or something), so I got really worried and paranoid... so I emailed them, and 8 hours later was told that my account was cancelled due to non payment. Fantastic! My credit card number was changed earlier this year due to a merchant breach and I totally forgot to update SO with the new number. But I don't remember ever seeing any billing/account related emails either, and I definitely wouldn't ignore such an email. The only emails I'd received from SO in the last 3 months were two marketing emails. You'd think they'd at least send an email saying my account was terminated? So, I'm pretty annoyed at this point.

So since I need to start all over anyways, maybe this is a good time to re-evaluate my cloud backup solution. :) I'm a huge fan of local encryption and will not consider an option which does not offer it. I was looking at Tresorit and Sync.com, and so far here's my list of differences/notes that matter to me:
    • Both offer 2FA (SO's is apparently in a perpetual BETA and doesn't offer it for new accounts)
    • Both have mobile apps that can actually sync to your account (SO's mobile app has read-only access).
    • Tresorit has no real way to undelete files, which seems pretty silly, and puts it at a real disadvantage. Just think: ransomware that encrypts your files with a different filename and deletes the original file will pose a real problem with Tresorit.
    • Tresorit allows you to backup any folder (one thing I loved about SpiderOak). With Sync.com, all your stuff needs to be in the "Sync" folder, which I despise. Although Symlinks are an option here and would let me keep my folder structure intact.
    • Sync.com is notably less expensive than both Tresorit and SO (although I have to wonder how they can offer so much storage for so little $...):
      • Sync.com: $49/yr for 500GB
      • Tresorit: $125/yr for 100GB
      • SO: $59/yr for 100GB
Does anyone have any experience with either of these companies? Of have a suggestion for another cloud backup service? Thanks!

I would expect such a service provider to:
    1. Email or otherwise contact you to inform you that the CC on record could not be successfully charged and remind you of what will happen next (their policies should be explained elsewhere too).
    2. Have a grace period during which your account would continue to function. Which would give you time to rectify the situation without experiencing a service interruption.
    3. Email or otherwise contact you to inform you that you did not rectify the situation and thus your account has been closed.
    4. Keep your data for a while longer in order to give you a final opportunity to recover your account without losing your data.
Do you actually know whether or not they tried to email you one or more notices? I mean: did you not only check whatever spam folders, logs, and other records you have access to but *also* explicitly ask them if they have records of doing so (including any error codes/messages if those received)?

I ask because in addition to the "recipient accidentally deleted an email without realizing it" scenarios there are also spam blocking and technical issues which can lead to email not getting through. It isn't unusual for account related email to be sent one way and marketing related email to be sent another way. I don't know if SpiderOak actually does that, but in general you can certainly run into a case where one type gets through and the other type doesn't get through. I think it is a good idea to try to clarify any cases where expected email isn't received. If for no other reason than to confirm it wasn't due to a problem that might come to affect other senders/accounts.

Can't help you there since I don't use them.

I use Jungle Disk backing up to the Rackspace server. Rackspace is the parent company. There TOS says they guarantee the safety of the data, providing you use the encryption in their software, with a strong password. You can even secure the program on your disk should you want to. Also I have talked with them and their hardware and facility security is top drawer. I routinely test restore and have never had an issue.
